Houdini 2 = trojan ?

Post by perejaslav »

Why Houdini 2.0 - after being installed - tries to send some unknown info to the cruxis.com?

Why I can not read about this strange behavior in the Houdini FAQ (http://www.cruxis.com/chess/manual/index.html)?

What is this like not a trojan horse?

I used three different Trojan scan software--AVG Antivirus, Avira and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. My system shows clean, no virus no trojan. I have several downloads from Houdini site, no problems so far. I also booted into safemode and scaned again with all three pieces of software. Cant find anything. Can you tell me what you are seeing so I can check something else?

If a program makes attempt to do something hidden from the user it's a malware!

Why Mr. Houdart didn't describe it in the FAQ?

I suspect this is a form of copy protection added so that Mr Houdart can track the use of pirated/unauthorized copies of Houdini.

Can you tell us more? How did you detect this communication attempt? What protocols/ports are being used? When does it occur---when the engine starts?

I agree that owners of software should be made aware of such activities.

I'm sure we'll hear from Robert soon.

Houdini doesn't contain any virus nor horse nor worm. On all computers that are in the Houdini development chain Microsoft Security Essentials is running permanently.

Of course, if you obtained your Houdini copy from a different source than the official Houdini download address (and maybe you did, as I cannot find your name in the Houdini user's list), there are no guarantees... who knows what hackers add into the code.

Sorry but your excuse is poor
Yes, I obtained it from the official site and use a real key for a Houdini though I didn't purchase it (it's not a „keygened“ key, it's a gift from a friend of mine). I like „try before you buy“ system ( but you decline it for H2.0 ) and now I must claim I will never buy a software from a man like you! Stop lying and tell all the truth to us! Why did you implement a hidden trojan into the Setup???

Shame on you, Mr. Houdart!

many chess software programs try to connect internet and UPDATE.

if you condemn houdini, you have to condemn shredder too.

Shame on you, Mr. Houdart!
For your info:
- The "try before buy" system for Houdini is the freely downloadable Houdini 1.5a.
- Houdini licenses are not transferable from one person to another.

Let me also copy you the definition of a Trojan from Wikipedia:
A Trojan horse, or Trojan, is a destructive program that masquerades as an application. The software initially appears to perform a desirable function for the user prior to installation and/or execution, but (perhaps in addition to the expected function) steals information or harms the system.[1] Unlike viruses or worms, Trojan horses do not replicate themselves, but they can be just as destructive.
Houdini does not contain a Trojan, it doesn't steal any information nor harm the system.
It appears that by your definition any software relying on license activation would be a Trojan...
