the guy would have met with hitler and stalin, if that would have been possible. he is a shame to the chess world.

Yes, terrible publicity for Assad, like he needed more.

Assad might be a dictator and all, but he is Bambi compared to what is trying to take over his place and rule Syria. At least now in Syria you have freedom to practice any religion and you will see Churches alongside Mosques and will even find Jews living together without much of a problem, and have done so for thousands of years. If the Wahabi fundementalist islamist opposition manages to take over, things will be dramatically worse. Doesn't mean that Assad is good, it just means that what wants to take his place is 1000x worse!

Sadly you are totally right: the same thoughts crossed my mind.

well i don't know, in Libya and Egypt things got more democratic,
but of course the rights of the minority Alawi's should also
be respected in case there would come democracy.

For the rest i suspect this is more a topic for the
chess thinkers forum, isnt it ?

It is more effective to press the (!) button. With your reply, you actually bumped the thread to the top of the list, when it was already half way in the first page. Tomorrow, it would have been in the second page. Now, to make sure it moves down quickly, I lock it.

An announcement about what the president of FIDE is doing has its place in the general forum. Of course, some threads are always sprinkled with off-topic comments, but that is ok if it is not excessive.
