Hi everybody.

Amid cheating accusations I would like to post one other very small thread of substance. The topic concerns the 45th game of Clemens Keck's 3Champs, where Stockfish, for a maybe 10th game in a row in a similar situation, lost to Komodo in the peculiar imbalance of queen versus 3 pieces. I would have gladly commented some other games of the tourney, however this was what actually caught my attention, not lastly because the topic of imbalances was recently discussed here, and there might still be some interest.

Stockfish has just played 17.Nb5, a move that involves trading with an ensuing imbalance of Q+2 pawns vs R + 2Ns. Now, in terms of material only, the Q+2Ns would make 11 pawns, while R+2Ns only 10.5 pawns, so Stockfish, which regards this position rather materialistically, might have thought it has an advantage. Komodo knows this is not so.

A critical position: Stockfish sees itself some half a pawn in advantage, while Komodo sees the same margin for itself. Which one is right? Of course, Komodo. Q+2 pawns are considerably weaker than R + 2Ns. You must simply have this imbalance evaluation for Q vs 3 pieces, otherwise relying just on material would be wrong. Obviously, there is not other reason for the Stockfish score, as otherwise the position is pretty simple.

The position at move 29. Stockfish already sees fully equal score, while Komodo sticks with its big advantage. Obviously it takes some time for Stockfish to see things changing, some 12 moves from the unfortunate trade, but the developments took their shape right at move 17.

6 moves on, at move 35, Stockfish already sees itself losing by a large margin, some 80cps. It took 20 moves for the evaluation to change from positive to very negative, but the fate of the game was sealed at move 17.

Some moves on, resistance already becomes futile. The 3 pieces are simply too much for the queen.

As was discussed recently in the Elephantiasis thread, the main reason for the predominance of the 3 pieces over the lonely queen could be the fact that the 3 pieces defend each other very well, so the queen can not attack and capture them, but also defend in a group successfully all own pawns, while the queen side can not defend its pawns, when a couple of pieces concentrate their attack on them. This would be true however, in a real chess game, only for the imbalance of Q vs 3 pieces. 4 minor pieces vs 2 rooks + pawns could also exhibit a similar behaviour favouring the 4 pieces over their material values, but, to be honest, I have encountered such imbalances in real chess games just once or twice in my whole life, if ever, so that this imbalance lacks practical importance.

So, if I were an engine developer, I would concentrate specifically only on the imbalance of Q vs 3 pieces where elephantiasis or the additional strength of the more pieces of lower power has effect. You have to have at least 2 pieces in terms of number more than your opponent in real life chess games, in order for the phenomenon to have effect. And that, as said, happens only in the imbalance of Q vs 3 pieces.

I think everytime you have an imbalance of Q+ pawns vs 3 pieces, you might bravely assign some additional evaluation bonus points to the side with more pieces of lower power. And this would be over the bonus for pair of bishops. It would not matter at that what the 3 pieces are: rooks, knights or bishops. I would only exclude from the rule Q vs 2Ns + B, where already the queen might be stronger. In all other cases, however, the rule should be valid.

I would give bonus for:
2Bs + N
2Rs + B, 2Rs + N
2Ns + R, R+B+N



I think in the standard case the bonus could be some 70cps, in the case 2Bs + N 50cps, while with 2 rooks it might amount to even a full pawn. However, a standard bonus of 70cps in all cases would be just fine and would solve some outstanding problems, not only with Stockfish, but with all other engines that do not know the rule. (Are there actually any other engines apart from Komodo that know the rule?)

I must say that, for posting this particular thread and for the illumination that 3 pieces are stronger than a lonely queen + pawns, I should thank Komodo, for the games I saw it playing in different tourneys (hey Larry, you are not angry with me for making public a secret weapon of Komodo, are you?:) ), Harm Mueller with his 7Ns vs 3Qs imbalance (obviously unrealistic imbalance with fully undecided outcome, but an illumination still), and ...
RJ Fischer.

It was a Fischer game that I replayed that finally convinced me that the majority of pieces vs a lonely queen matters. Thank you Robert!

But I would also appreciate very much a possible implementation of this piece of very simple knowledge into a number of chess engines (so that I do not use this blind spot to win a lot of games )

Obviously no interest here (you need a cheating topic to arouse interest), but I must say that the imbalance of queen vs 3 pieces is not that infrequent at all. It appears in 100 games played in this edition of the 3Champs, it appeared in 2 of the previous editions with a similar number of games, it appeared in different other tourneys (I am not quite sure about TCEC, as I did not see all the games there, but the imbalance might have been present). So, I would say, it should be relevant about 1 in 100 games, that makes 10 games out of 1000 and 100 games if 10 000 testing games are played.

I do not know what the elo increase should be if an engine wins 100 more games out of 10 000, but there should be some.

On the other hand, the imbalance of 4 minors vs 2 rooks + pawns should appear only in 1 game of about 10 000, so it really has not practical importance.

don't be so impatient. It is just 1 day.

I have some imbalance stuff in my eval but no Q vs 3 pieces. I thought this is handled by mobility and threats already. 3 pieces have a much greater mobility (maybe with the exception of 2 knights) than the queen (whose mobility weight is also smaller).

So it might be overlapping.

Also tuning this imbalance is hard because a feature that only occurs in 1% of the games and maybe only in half of those cases changes the outcome of the game is very difficult to tune.

I might give it a try anyway, as this can be handled with the material signature, it at least provides almost no computational costs.

This reminds me of my suggestion to you whether you know of some good balanced late midgame positions for tuning more endgame related stuff.

Here is one sample that seems to give good winning chances to both white and black

You can of course change that by starting from initial positions that already contain a Q vs 3 pieces imbalance. Then all games are guaranteed to contain the imbalance, and tuning becomes very easy. In fact you would not even have to tune: you would be measuring the value of the imbalance directly, and could use that value directly in your evaluation.

What I usually do is start from positions that delete the minimally needed number of pieces to create the imbalance, and then shuffle the remaining pieces in a Chess960-like way on the back-rank. That gives usually enough positions to play many non-identical games. For orthodox Chess there you can furthermore choose from dozens of strong engines, to let them play out the positions in self play. So it is quite easy to acquire enough statistics (a few thousand games).

Yes, I think that certainly even if there are no more immediate replies, this is a very interesting subject. And it's possible that there are more engines who eval this more like Stockfish than Komodo. I stil am not 150% sure the eval of Stockfish is the direct cause of the loss, it may well be, and there also is a slight but definite possibility that somehow this imbalance was completely mistuned in the case of Stockfish I can't be sure yet because when you try to tune the table differently the results among all positions may fall off a cliff, I have not tested yet, but I almost got Scid Serpent to not play 17. Nb5 anymore.

I am puzzled a bit interpreting the depths reached, for this move it says in the .pgn 17. Nb5 {(Bd3) +0.68/36 3:56m } cxb5 {+0.10/27 4:49m }
but Scid Serpent only completes depth 36 after 145 minutes on a Quad 6700, not overclocked, here... Has hardware progressed that much?

Anyway, I almost got the engine to not play 17. Nb5 but exactly around depth 36 it still went wrong. Earlier attemps play the move 17 Nb5 earlier, at lower depths though and I have not tested if these later change their mind and play something else earlier than this version.

you would be measuring the value of the imbalance directly, and could use that value directly in your evaluation.

That is a good idea but I probably have to find out first what a pawn advantage means in terms of winning probability for my engine. I don't know that yet.

Well, that could also depend upon the circumstances. The way I always do it is delete a Pawn in the imbalance situation for the side that seems to have the upper hand. E.g. to measure the value of the Bishop pair, I delete N on one side, and B on the other (the side missing N being white in half the cases and black in the other half, to average out any first-move advantage).

The side missing the N (and thus still has the B-pair) then turns out to score, say 59%. So I delete a Pawn for that side as well, and run again. Say it now scores only 41%. Apparently the Pawn was worth 18%. The advantage of the B pair was only 9%, i.e. exactly half. So the B-pair is empirically worth half a Pawn, in opening positions. Once you have done this often enough, you become so certain of the Pawn value that you can even deduce values from only one imbalance.

With 400 games you would have 2% statistical error (1 SD), which then is ~0.11 Pawn. So it is quite easy to determine piece values (or values of more specific imbalances) upto 10 cP, not a big effort at al.

don't be so impatient. It is just 1 day.

I have some imbalance stuff in my eval but no Q vs 3 pieces. I thought this is handled by mobility and threats already. 3 pieces have a much greater mobility (maybe with the exception of 2 knights) than the queen (whose mobility weight is also smaller).

So it might be overlapping.

Also tuning this imbalance is hard because a feature that only occurs in 1% of the games and maybe only in half of those cases changes the outcome of the game is very difficult to tune.

I might give it a try anyway, as this can be handled with the material signature, it at least provides almost no computational costs.

This reminds me of my suggestion to you whether you know of some good balanced late midgame positions for tuning more endgame related stuff.

I am not impatient at all, it is just human nature.

I think the formula works, but only in the case of queen vs 3 pieces. In the case of equal number of pieces but with different types, or one of the sides having just a single piece more it would probably be better to handle the imbalance by tuning piece values or introducing imbalance evaluation in terms of piece types, repetitions, etc. With smaller values of course. There you would be measuring coordination in terms of how the different pieces complement each other.

When you have 3 pieces vs a lone queen, i.e. one of the sides having 2 pieces more, which is already a quantity, what would matter would be rather coordination of the bigger number of pieces in terms of their ability to defend each other and the own pawns, as well as attack the enemy pawns that could not be defended successfully by the lone queen. Complementarity would matter less here, so better stick with the abovementioned formula. I think 50% of imbalances very roughly should consist of an imbalance featuring equal number of pieces, another 40% of imbalances consisting of an imbalance with one of the sides having a piece more (for some enemy pawns), and only about 10% should feature the peculiar 3 pieces vs queen imbalance or even the more exotic 4 minors vs 2 rooks.

It is rare, but a very interesting imbalance, I would say difficult for humans to play and understand.

The position you posted certainly does not belong here, it is just one piece more for one of the sides, not 2.

Regarding the possibility that the imbalance is handled by mobility, I think that in the general case the mobility of the 3 pieces would be only slightly superior to that of the queen (probably just a couple of mobile squares more), so that would not be enough to capture the real balance of powers of both sides; in this imbalance the 3 pieces should usually be stronger by some 70cps to a full pawn additionally.

Sorry for dryly theorising and not being helpful, but nothing else comes to my mind right now...

At move 21 Gull thought it was ahead (+0.51) while Hiarcs thought that it had the lead itself (-0.37). Overall it took Gull many moves to realize that the queen wasn't good enough to win nor to draw.

Hi Lyudmil,

the position I posted was not especially for the lonely queen.

It is a position that is fairly imbalanced, has from all piece types at least 1 sample and has winning chances for both sides.

This makes it a good position to start games from, when you want to tune the terms especially present in the endgame.

It is not trivial to find such positions.

The imbalance stuff I put on my todo list. It is worth a try.
