TheKing350 in Arena

Post by David Dahlem »

TheKing350 engine is working as a WB engine in Arena. I set up Inbetween.exe to grab the opk number and this is what i got in the console window ...

---------------------------------
Priority class set to idle
Thread priority set to normal
xboard
cm_parm opk=******
post
new
level 0 5 3
cm_parm default
cm_parm opp=100 opn=100 opb=100 opr=100 opq=100
cm_parm myp=100 myn=100 myb=100 myr=100 myq=100
cm_parm mycc=100 mymob=100 myks=100 mypp=100 mypw=100
cm_parm opcc=100 opmob=100 opks=100 oppp=100 oppw=100
cm_parm cfd=0 sop=100 avd=0 rnd=0 sel=14 md=99
cm_parm tts=67108864
---------------------------------

So i created this init string and entered it in the Arena Engines/Manage/Details/Special/Init string dialog ...

cm_parm default\cm_parm opk=****** opp=100 opn=100 opb=100 opr=100 opq=100 myp=100 myn=100 myb=100 myr=100 myq=100 mycc=100 mymob=100 myks=100 mypp=100 mypw=100 opcc=100 opmob=100 opks=100 oppp=100 oppw=100 cfd=0 sop=100 avd=0 rnd=0 sel=14 md=99 tts=67108864

Seems to be working ok, except Arena shows only 1mb of hash usage, no matter what value i put in the tts parameter. Here is the Arena log file for one move from the start position ...

How much memory is the engine using under the task manager? Is it only using 1 MB? I had that problem until Graham send me his wb2uci.ini. Here is the one for one of the chessmaster 10000 personalities. Using this, The King uses a total of 32MB I believe. As the programmer of Sage and Pooky you wouldnt have a problem figuring out what's going on.

For the benefit of readers who would like to use "The King" engine in Arena and Chessbase interfaces, it is possible to set up a script that will deal with the opk problem automatically. Details of how this can be done are found here:
http://www.volny.cz/evcomp/opk.htm

The author of the page suggests that the alternative method, using opk.bat and opk.exe, may not work in Windows XP. It does work in Windows XP, I have it working on my machine.

Keith, do you have the new version of King working using the above method that you mentioned? If you could, can you please upload your directory somewhere (without the king 350 engine)? Or you can place a dummy .exe in place of King 350 and then all the user would have to do is to copy the king to the directory, and hit yes to the pop-up message.

It's using the proper amount of hash, 256mb. But for some reason, Arena is only showing 1mb. Arena shows the correct hash usage on all my other engines.

I also tried TheKing350 with the wb2uci adapter, and it works fine that way too. This is the wb2uci.eng file i used ...

[ENGINE]
Name=The King 3.50
Author=Johan de Koning
Filename=Wb2uci.exe

[OPTIONS]
Program=C:\Arena\Engines\CM 11/TheKing350\TheKing350.exe
InitString=cm_parm default\ncm_parm opk=****** opp=100 opn=100 opb=100 opr=100 opq=100 myp=100 myn=100 myb=100 myr=100 myq=100 mycc=100 mymob=100 myks=100 mypp=100 mypw=100 opcc=100 opmob=100 opks=100 oppp=100 oppw=100 cfd=0 sop=100 avd=0 rnd=0 sel=14 md=99\n
HashCommand=cm_parm tts=262144000\n
Ponder=off
Visible=Ponder,Hash,Logfile

Haven't had a chance to try other things, like omitting or changing the HashCommand entry, since the hash size can be adjusted in Arena. And it does use 256mb with this setup, and the hash size set in the UCI configuration window.

The only little glitch is the need for the opk number, but once you get it set, i think it stays set until the next reboot.

Tony, i dont know where you got your facts from, but obviously you have never run a CM10th personality in chessbase. You can change the hash to basically whatever you want it. For 40/40 we run the CM10 personalities on 124mb hash, because they wont hit directly on 128mb. That is as close as you can get. For blitz you can run them on 32 mb, or anything else, just like any other UCI engine. You just cannot lower the hash, only raise it. It you want to lower the hash, the workaround is change engines, lower hash, and then change back to CM. Is all this clear? :D

George, what happend to you? I do not own any chessbase products, I use arena only. Under arena, regardless of what you change, the display shows 2MB hash usage, but you can see another process running on task manager named Kingwb13 that uses around 32MB. Again, I am using the package send to me by Graham.

Im off my medication right now, Tony. Dont know anything about Arena, and that is more than i want to know. Im sure its fine- just not for me.
Graham helped you with it? Hmm. I shall have to ponder over that one for a short time. :shock: :o

I'm using a FreeMem program that displays the total memory usage of all processes in the system tray. So i can note the number displayed, and when i start an engine, it will change, so a little math tells me how much memory it's using.

In case anyone's interested, i just uploaded some new logos for the new TheKing engines ...

Here is the one for one of the chessmaster 10000 personalities. Using this, The King uses a total of 32MB I believe. As the programmer of Sage and Pooky you wouldnt have a problem figuring out what's going on.

Im off my medication right now, Tony. Dont know anything about Arena, and that is more than i want to know. Im sure its fine- just not for me.
Graham helped you with it? Hmm. I shall have to ponder over that one for a short time. :shock: :o
After many failed attempts to use it as a WB engine under arena using inbetween.ini (not that using adapters arent my forte as I am against them), I posted a message here asking for help. He then send me the packet describing what to do, and few personalities, out of those, I chose D2alos, because it was leading the chessmaster blitz list.
