It was a great deal of fun operating Spark. Spark was a very tactical player frequently reaching greater reported depths than the opponent. I tuned the book to match some of my personal favorite opening lines as I tend to like open tactical games.
Round 1 Micromax:
No big surprises here. MicroMax brought it's queen out early and Spark took advantage to get a lead in space and time scoring +1.77 out of book. A rather quick and crushing game.

Re: Spark in WCRCC Game 2
This was the worst tournament game for Spark. Twisted's book line went farther than Spark's and 15. g4 is quite interesting. I think the only hope for Spark was to have castled earlier so the rook could help build counter play on the Q-side. After 17. Rg8 Spark really had no chance to stop the crushing Squeeze Twisted executed.

Re: Spark in WCRCC Round 3
Round 3
I got to see for the first time my pet line against the Sicilian. Scorpio chose to trade it's strong bishop to create a pawn weakness, and Spark traded the queens. Scorpio was left with no active pieces and behind on space. Spark saw a minor advantage coming out of book, and was able to steadily build on it. The first major tournament victory for Spark, catapulting it to play the big guys.

Round 4
Black against Deep Sjeng. Playing the black side of the Sicilian now. I think Black's line was a little too passive, and when Sjeng cut off Spark's chance to castle, I was having a flashback to round 2. 2 wins as white 2 losses as black.

Black against Deep Sjeng. Playing the black side of the Sicilian now. I think Black's line was a little too passive, and when Sjeng cut off Spark's chance to castle, I was having a flashback to round 2. 2 wins as white 2 losses as black.

Re: Spark in WCRCC Round 6
Round 6
Spark vs. Crafty
Apparently bob wasn't planning on having Crafty in the tournament, so Crafty probably wasn't playing it's best. Spark playing a second white in a row. Turned out to be a closed Spanish Smyslov. Spark left book on move 12 with mild optimism. Move 33 Spark got to sack a rook to open up the king side and when the dust settled Spark was up a mass of pawns against a knight for the win.

Spark vs.

Re: Spark in WCRCC Round 7
Round 7
Black vs. Rybka
Did not look good for ending the losing streak with black, to be paired against Rybka. Having Black against the top two players seems like a serious handicap. However the game didn't seem to go so bad Rybka played a deep book line that led to a fairly close endgame, Rybka had the advantage of Bishop over Knight in an open board, but Rybka traded that off to isolate a pawn at move 41. Spark however failed to play cautiously enough and traded down to a TB loss.

Re: Spark in WCRCC Round 8
Round 8
Last round of the first day. And again Black against a top engine, Hiarcs! Another Sicilian, Spark left book slightly pessimistic, but pushed e4 to keep the center in flux and again chose not to castle. Spark fell behind a pawn but was the board was open enough that the rook and queen could force a draw. 4.5/8 and having already played 3 of the top engines (all with black) didn't seem like a bad finish for the day.

Re: Spark in WCRCC Round 9
Round 9
First game of the day is a tough one, White against Stockfish. Spark plays an Italian which is a 10% chance book move and Stockfish rewards it with 4 ... d6? a book blunder. Spark however failed to create enough pressure with the q-side pawn advantage and with opposite bishops Stockfish was able to hold a draw.

Re: Spark in WCRCC Round 10
Round 10
Black against Learning Lemming. Spark was online for several days before the tournament, and Learning Lemming was playing many practice games in that time against Spark. Spark's record before the tournament was +65 -1 =8 against the Lemming, so I wasn't particularly worried. The opening book picked a low probability line that was new to Lemming as well. An exciting Queens Gambit, Spark pushed the queen side pawns early opened it up and traded it's queen for a rook pair. Finally Spark gets a win as black.
