for those interested, here are some numbers on my new 8-core machine.
Specs: AMD-FX8120@4GHz, 8 GB RAM, Asus M5A99X EVO, Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

It would be nice to have a comparison with say an Octa Intel setup to see how things stack up. There must be a lot of positive things in having 8 cores on a single die, and at 4 Ghz the speed is very good.

The i7-3930K better perform much above it, as its price is almost 4x as the AMD CPU. ($600 vs $175)

Well, it is nice to have 8 cores on one die. Unfortunately, Bulldozer CPUs are running on the hotter side. So you definitely need a very good cooling.

But the speed at 4 GHz is better than I expected. I read several reviews about the Bulldozers and their poor performance, especially with 1 core.

Of course, an Intel 8 core system is faster. But you have to spend much more bucks, too.
