Eve and the Apple

Post by fern »

The only act that has ever been 100% original was when Eve took the apple from the tree. From then on all is derivative.
Of course, some things are more "derivative" than others.

We should have some nuances, I think the open scientific research in universities or similar institutions, with rated journals, rated papers, peer-reviewing, openess, competitivity, accountability, etc. (I think I miss the most important, rewards from businesses or state for good theoretical works per se, without the need of marketing etc.) is the way in CC. What you see here are some folks who want to do it quickly (often dubious works), and other folks who want all to stay 20 years inventing the wheel like they did (a fact which does not preclude many of them of having dubious works too from scientific point of view).

Obviously the right thing is the middle way, where you pick up what has been done before, but in order to do something better. Just copies are not legitimate, but to pretend perennial reinvention is preposterous. Chess programming is part science, part technology and part art. Both the first and second aspects can be and must be used to get new advances.
The code writing I guess is the artistic side of it and should be considered private.

It was not the apple on the tree but the pair on the ground that caused the trouble in the garden.

The Real Creator thinks quite differently than any semitic invention.

My dear friend, I have understood this from the beginning, but perhaps I am not always clear in my statements. Do not forget that English is NOT my native language, as it should be notorious from my poor writing.

Good point. Many forget that much of language understanding comes from reading nonverbal clues. Certainly, makes writing difficult even with the primary language! So, a second or third is tough.
