Here black has just blundered with 26...c4? so now white has to decide between 27. Rxd4 or h5 both of which are winning. However which one is stronger and which one does your engine prefer to play? Confused

Hello!

I tried Critter 1.6 w32 with Multi PV = 2. Analysis by Critter 1.6 w32 in an Intel Pentium D930 (using two cores) with 512 MB of hash and 32 MB of cache for the full set of Gaviota TBs, running under Arena 2.0.1 GUI:

I stopped the analysis after 27 minutes; Arena showed five tablebase hits. Critter prefers 27.- h5 at depth 20/66 in my analysis.

Here black has just blundered with 26...c4? so now white has to decide between 27. Rxd4 or h5 both of which are winning. However which one is stronger and which one does your engine prefer to play? Confused

Critter-1.4 prefers Rxd4 followed by h5:

They both have the same PV, as there's a transposition with firts 3 plies....

IMO this is a position which sorts tactical play (Rxd4 wins a pawn) against positional play (h5 increases pressure against the Black king).

That's true..(but what is more important in this position?), and that is what a program needs to ask.

Both moves scoring about 4, this is usually enough to win with best moves played.

But my point is what is truly the best way to go...we can choose h5 everytime. The machine needs to know why.

Fischer played h5 in this position, and gave up a whole Q at h7 a few moves later, to deliver a mate with his spanish B.
So maybe h5 is the best move : ), pawn grabbing with Rxd4 seems not to be inline with Fischers plan to deliver mate in this type of position.

But Rxd4 can also transpose to the mating attack, though that would be 1 move slower I guess.

Yes, so to follow a logical plan, h5! is necessary. When computers master ideas they will be on a new level.
