Test your cheater detection skills!

Post by Mike S. »

"CompiDetection" is a collection of ten chess games, intended to test if man and machine can reliably be distinguished from each other. You can try if you are a good anti-cheater detective and see how many comps you can recognize correctly, from these examples. But you just get the moves only, to judge upon!

None of the games has really involved cheating though: With one exception, they all were "official".

In seven games, one player was a computer. Three games are human-only.

The openings up to the 8th move were omitted, because those are usually database- or knowledge based. That may make the judgement a bit more difficult, but also helps to avoid wrong conclusions.

Blundercheck:

All games were checked with Houdini 1.5a at a calculation depth of 18 plies, and with a blunder threshold of 25 centipawns. I think this is a pretty small margin at least for mere mortals, so it can be seen as a kind of precision meter, too.

Of course this can, and probably should be improved by using bigger depths and a variety of different engines. But note that if very small thresholds are used, you may get many "matter of taste" complaints from the engines, just being based on a few centipawns of evaluation noise.

The games (PGN): http://remixshare.com/dl/v0f27/CompiDetectionPGN.zip

The download contains two files, to supply you both with old and new PGN formats (the difference is just how the engine calculation infos are stored).

I am planning to reveal the names of the players each, and upload a full PGN, sooner or later. If you think you have clearly identified a computer, please tell us your detection method, or what the giveaway was which gave you the hint.
Regards, Mike

Re: Test your cheater detection skills!

Post by yanquis1972 »

well, i'm a crappy chess player, so i would've been analyzing pure aesthetics, but here's my quick but serious take -- i cheated in a couple -massive- ways by giving houdini's analysis a look before each game and much moreso by using CB livebook (# of games/move, mostly; occasional investigation into scores. no peeking/no elos noted intentionally or otherwise.)on the first few moves to weed out some obvious ones if the deck isn't stacked (eg comp playing w/out book, other possible tricks).here's my stab at the thing operating the white pieces, first:

WHITE

game 1: ??? possible comp. (very clean, hard to say)
game 2: definite human (bad book).
game 3: definite human (13. a5 looks human to me, or a comp. w/ some tweaked settings [another possible trick!])
game 4: human (immediate 9. a3 was probably a novelty).
game 5: ??? possible comp. (white is a suspected human from the opening, but it's based on one move & text is still 2nd best. anyone who knows anythign about endings can prob. get this one; i don't.)
game 6: definite human (suspected human from opening [odd move]; sac is very much of the flesh. or, again, a custom-tweaked engine)
game 7: ??? frustrating since its obv either a computer, or a human playing one. come back to it, lean human (adv. white out of book per houdini but still drawn, seemed more passive in the endgame).
game 8: definite human; opening choice.
game 9: really tough call, but black makes the first heavy miss-step in the opening here. 70% chance human...i'll take the odds. could be a very dynamic engine, junior, a hiarcs, R3D? if it was human, it had guts.
game 10: white is getting eyed by me like a hawk if im TD & this is submitted to me to inspect. houdini being so ho-hum confirms silicon guiding system extremely likely on this one. comp.

tally: wow, i'm kinda shocked i only had one tagged as a computer for sure. 6 human, 3 question marks...

game 1: gonna go with my gut & say computer here, which makes me feel bleh about the game 5 guess now (went back up this on the second pass). very sharp, the quick trading down threw me but checkign the eval, i think its a strong case as very weak cases go.

game 5: another good one for endgame ppl; this is a toss-up for me, but it's an easy guess for me: white pieces in G5 is a computer (fighting out drawn endgame, clean 0.00 eval at end)

game 7: gonna go whites a human; houdini gives black slight odds & no draw w/ the other 2 indicators is enough to guess at it)

SO:thats 7 human, 3 comp...actually; i'm ok with my guesses then, as this would still put the majority of comp games as having black pieces. ill go w/ it.

this was a surprising amount of fun, will give the black pieces a shot in a bit, hopefully slightly more thorough/less reliant on 'cheating' w/ data & examine individual moves a bit more.

alrite, from the other side. should note that i am doing case-by-case & not paying special mind to the pile unless it's a deciding factor; will prob. go by memory & note if so but if these contradict each other its ok w/ me.

game 1: ? suspected human from opening selection; weakish second choice. i picked white comp before; really wanna go w/ human here, but something tells me to come back. feel like there's a solid clue to point at one way or the other somewhere.
game 2: ??? i mustve picked human here for white; but this is a tough call w/ black pieces. solid book; another frustrating one i'll come back to.
game 3: iffy book, & here's where i remember the evals are right there to look at. think i mustve picked human w/ white here. blacks book could be iffy, nothing pops out to me; i'm gonna go w/ this as my first human-human game. i'll try to knock two more out if things gel.
game 4: ??? hard call. could be anything; need to sniff out a signature.
game 5: believe i ended up with white as computer before; blacks book may or may not be suspect for a comp depending on date. gonna line it up & go human
game 6: white was a human, what about black? feel llike i wouldve heard about this in any kind of man-machine match as it wouldve been trumpeted for some time either way. of course i realize these could be blitz games & other rarities.still going to choose this as the second human-human game.
game 7: again i'll stick with my prior evaluation; that means we have a computer here
game 8: weird ending calls this one out, but i wanted to say human before that (one of the pawn moves restricting own bishops mobility seemed very odd for a machine). computer
game 9: fun to revisit this one mirrored. black went what today is theoretically wrong but that isn't a sign of anything certain as this one surely got some recognition. whites feeding off of blacks greed so ill go ahead & call it: computer, but it doesn't feel esp good. i could've probably rationalized the opposite call for this one.
game 10: called white a computer, have no problem picking black as human

so thats 4 humans, 3 comps, 3 unknowns & 1 human-human game to sort out amongst those. 6 computer players total out of 7 possible meaning...i messed up somewhere. these last 3 are not gonna be fun, here goes

revisit:

game 1: i picked white as a computer here; knowing that one of these 3 is (assuming my picks are all correct, which they arent) human-human, need to pay special attn to comp eval. steady as can be here, would be a machine-machine candidate, which is prob why its here...gonna say black is a human with ice in his veins. maybe a kramnik-DF game.

game 2: per livebook, white steered off the beaten path first. also think contempt settings would come into play if this isnt ancient. sofia rules and my final human-human match in the set if the next one doesnt upset that admitted shot in the dark.

game 4: whites opening play is unlikely to be a comp, so assuming human there...and yeah, fighting for a win at the end. this & the last are v difficult for me; i feel like its a coinflip. the evaluation is again ridiculously steady here; but again that could be some deceipt. still makes me easy enough to stay with what ive got. black must be a computer against an extremely strong human.

so, my guesses for the BLACK pieces (working w/ more info but trying to keep everythign tidy), in sum:

1: HUMAN
2: HUMAN-HUMAN game
3: HUMAN-HUMAN game
4: COMPUTER
5: HUMAN
6: HUMAN-HUMAN game
7: COMPUTER
8: COMPUTER
9: COMPUTER
10: HUMAN

looking fwd to seeing how i scored...thanks mike!

Thx for your replies, but please note that in seven games ONE player was a computer, not both sides.

The challenge is to identify the computer each, white or black.

i may try that challenge as well, but i think my tallies ended up matching, so i should have a full guess. i figured w/ the 3 wild cards it'd be easier on the brain to look at one color at a time.

@John Dalhem and others, just to make it clear: This is not to distinguish 100% comp games from human games, here always one (or two) of the contenters were a human players...

Sorry, simply saying game X "COMP" is no solution! What do you mean? Which side is the comp?
