Stockfish 1.7 has a default paramater of 2 threads. When I change that to 4, should I also change these 2 default paramaters:
maximum split depth 4
maximum number of threads per split point 5

No, you can leave those as they are.
The only exception is that when you are using 8 threads, you should set maximum split depth to 7.
