Francesca is MAD ! Very MAD !

Post by Sylwy »

Hi all !

I have two WinBoard ladies I love a lot : Francesca and EveAnn !

Well , this morning both were well - disposed  so a match was inevitable !

Now , coming (soon) , the serious part of my post : this new EveAnn 1.67 wasn't able to finish a single game under WinBoard GUI. From January 2012 to Aprill 2012 . Just before every adjudication an ugly message appears ( see the below capture , please).
Maybe Mr. Andrés Valverde Toresano has some free time to repair this nice chess lady ! Thank you a lot in advance !

Have - you all - a nice weekend !

SilvianR

A side note:
I am surprised that FranMad still is one of the very very few WB programs
which doesn't declare mate?
(A workaround for your problem would be to set adjudication to a normal
value, you must have set it it to > 100 or disabled at all - still the problem
is interesting and could be a WB problem too - debug is needed)

@Andres from the screenshot it looks like you have to disable any ajudication
and play against an engine which does not declare mates on itself to verify the problem(if it exists...)

Well , from a game : EveAnn1.67-Frittle 1.0:

A. the WinBoard.debug file is here:

B. Velásquez fresco from this game is here:

My public/private information is that in all games EveAnn 1.67 has this problem on WinBoard ! And I think isn't a WinBoard problem because some true legions of WB chess engines work in this Mr. HGM factory everyday having not this sindrome !
Wishing a good health for the young chess ladies and a superb weekend for you ,

Fatal Error: Error: first chess program (eveann.exe) exited unexpectedly
After EveAnn lost on time and WB's result message it did not react immediately and finished the iteration.
WB sent an undo of the move and it seems it went into console mode and crashed with the message bitbasepath wouldn't be valid.
The debug regrettably misses the first part with the initialisation of EveAnn, thus I cannot see if there was another complain
about the bitbase path in the beginning, but at least it started nevertheless.

I noticed though that you played with ponder on and that EveAnn reached
abnormal low depths.

Hello Maestro Valverde !

A bit of help !

In the previous game (EveAnn-Frittle) Scorpio bitbases were enabled but missing on this my PC.
Here is a winboard debug file from a game EveAnn-Djinn 0.925x with all the three bitbases options ( path , cache , men number) disabled in EveAnn.ini file:

www.spaadyshare.com/KH2YAORVV1BW/winboard.zip

If you are interested , this evening , I can send you also a debug file with Scorpio bitbases installed and enabled - from my private bunker !

The phenomenon is the same !

SilvianR

Nope , Maestro Guenther !

PONDER_ENABLED = NO in EveAnn.ini file - in both games !!

That's the problem ;-) You played with ponder on, but disabled it in
EveAnns ini file, which means the opponent pondered and EveAnn not.
Still this does not explain the crashing though.

Well, for some reason EveAnn is playing at 6 knps in all the samples you have sent/shown. Yes, it is not a fast engine but not so slow either :-), in an average system it would search at 300-400 knps and reaching 12-13 plies in a 40/5 game instead of 5-7 plies.

Maybe can you try with ponder off for both engines? Thanks in advance

NOTE : 1.67 has hard-coded ponder disabled, no matter if you set it to TRUE in ini file.

Guenther
EveAnn is getting very few CPU time (no idea why) and I guess it is missing WB commands because of that.
