I use it at ICC. I wish they would put in a save my password command! I would say the Playchess gui is nicer.

well it's useful indeed at ICC, or Fics possibly, and i've done some
book testing with its ERT (engine research feature).
and the CP interface may not might be as glossy as Fritz
but you can load UCI engines, unlike with Winboard,
and its bugfree, or to a large extent bug-free at least.

the book grandmas.bk which you can download at their site
is doing better than the general.bk which is their default book.

and as part of an earlier perfect2012.zip package by Canbaz
there also was a perfect.bk suitable for the CP interface.

and you can load both books together if you wish,
so have fun

jef
(no not affiiliated with CP, just used it for quite some
time now and also Dutch as its owner Lex Loep)

Jef,
But you can load Winboard engines, unlike with Fritz...
Also, Winboard can load UCI engines last time I checked 8-)

I have to concur ChessPartner is a great GUI, especially for playing an engine on FICS or ICC, and for tweaking an opening book on the fly in between games.

CL

ok, maybe nowadays we can, and i know there are
tools like wb2uci and so on but with all respect to Hgm,
the method with the winboard.ini files still don't look very
user friendly , that is, easy-to-use, to me. . (well yes, i can
find it out but sometimes it doesnt get a high prio and i skip it)

You can load UCI engines straight from the menus within Winboard without touching the ini.

Virtually everything is Menu driven in the later versions of Winboard.

If you ever touch any ini file for configuring WinBoard, you must either be doing something very special, or very wrong. And the former certainly does not apply to 'running UCI engines', which is a standard task, achieved by most people through ticking the 'UCI' checkbox when installing the engine, as only extra action compared to installing a native WinBoard engine.

Even for special stuff (like installing engines with fixed time odds, or massaging highly non-compliant engines into working) you would not have to edit the winboard.ini file directly, as there is a menu item to show you the engine list, where you can add unusual options on the engine line for engines that would need them.

Your remarks have nothing to do with user-friendliness of the software, and everything with software-friendliness of the user!
