I do not understand the excessive shipping costs to southern hemispheric countries. It costs only a moderate amount to fly a 100 kg human from here to there, so shipping a 1 kg package should be only a small fraction of that. The package can sit in the cargo hold and doesn't need drinks or an air sickness bag.

Perhaps much of the price delta is from import duties or sales tax.

It is called business. Cargo is a great source of income to companies and besides it has extra cost to deliver a package compared to deliver a passenger. The operation of loading, supervising etc a simple one kilo of something is bigger than to call guys from a speaker to get into the plane.
We have here in Chile a commercial agreement with USA, no taxes paid or not big, but, the same, price tends to double. I know it very well with my Amazon books purchases.
