Amateur McMahon System Tournament

Post by Adam Hair »

The tournament starts this weekend. Here are the conditions:

Computer: Dell server with 2x L5420 Xeon processors @ 2.5 GHz and 16 GB of memory
Operating System: Linux Mint 15 64-bit (Wine is used to run Windows compiles)
GUI: Cutechess 0.6
Time Control: 30' + 1" per move

Hash: up to 4096M
Bitbases and Tablebases: 5 men Scorpio, Syzygy, Gaviota, and Nalimov available
Ponder: Off (not compatible with Cutechess)
Learning: On
Book: 2 move GUI book

I will be using the McMahon system for determining the pairings. CCRL 40/40 ratings (and strength estimates where needed) will be used to assign the initial points to the field. Each pairing will play 2 games (reversed colors). 11 rounds will be played.

And here are the participants:

The tournament has started. Hopefully in the future I will be able to broadcast similar tournaments.

I will be using the McMahon system for determining the pairings. CCRL 40/40 ratings (and strength estimates where needed) will be used to assign the initial points to the field. Each pairing will play 2 games (reversed colors). 11 rounds will be played.
Is it possible to update the engine?

By the way, I have forgotten to state anything about the points awarded each round (though it is probably obvious to anyone interested).

In each round, an engine can score between 0 and 2 points, depending on the results of its 2 game, reverse color match. After each round, I will pair engines that are closest in cumulative score while avoiding repeat matches.

Interesting tournament, Adam, but is there a reason why engines like Hannibal, Nirvanachess and Fizbo are being excluded?

They are not being excluded on purpose. Unfortunately, those engines are incompatible with my computer. My server uses older Xeon processors that lack the SSE4.2 instruction set, and my OS is an older version of Linux Mint that is not compatible with the newest version of the GCC compiler. And, of course, Windows engines require the use of Wine, which is not compatible with every Windows program.

I am happy that most engines will run correctly on my computer.
