I am thinking of buying Threadripper, use it for a year and then selling it for maybe half price to recoup some of the money and then buying the next smaller dye CPU when that comes out etc... The nice thing about AMD is that they charge a lot less money.
Well, I am still wondering how will the Threadripper 1950x perform for chess.... will it be Ryzen 1800x x2 ?

Just seen that the i9 7920x will have 12 cores but with "only" 2.9 GHz compared to the i9 7900x with 10 cores but at 3.3 GHz.

The 7920x is a real deception.

Not really. The base speeds are meaningless. No Overclocker worth his salt is going to buy such an expensive CPU and run it at Default speeds ?!

Well it seems the i9 is a challenge to OC. So it may be a problem to properly evacuate the heat generated.

If it is Ryzen 1800 x2 I am very OK with that.

"Intel Flagship: Core i9-7980XE Extreme Edition 18 cores. Speed 4.5 GHz on i9." This chip sounds very appealing.

Running on 4 cores and 16 cores the difference is about 80 Elo.
That´s the difference between Magnus Carlsen (2822) and Ian Nepomniachtchi (2742)... Ian can eventually draw Carlsen, but Carlsen would beat him in a long match - at stock clock and temperatures

I am not sure I understand how these CPU will perform for chess?
In the following link, it seems that the i9 7900x performs better than the 7960x and much better than the Threadripper 1950x at integer calculation

http://optocrypto.com/2017/07/24/intel- ... per-1950x/

Seems really strange to me looking at the numbers why one would buy a 7960x instead of the 7900x

I would bench it on your particular application before making a decision.
The integer bench being lower means nothing if it plays chess better.
Taking ideas is not a vice, it is a virtue. We have another word for this. It is called learning.
But sharing ideas is an even greater virtue. We have another word for this. It is called teaching.

These articles always seem to say that so and so crushed or annihilated the other one. Many exaggerations. For myself, if AMD is close in performance I will buy AMD and save a lot of money. Also, AMD is rumored to overclock to 5 Ghz.
