HIARCS 11.1 SP / MP Macintosh has arrived!

Post by rafowell »

Well, we can answer the question asked in the thread:
http://www.talkchess.com/forum/viewtopi ... 06&t=11733
"When is HIARCS 11.1 coming to the Macintosh?"

Mark Uniacke sent out this release announcement yesterday -
for more info go to his site:
http://www.hiarcs.com/mac_chess_hiarcs.htm
and/or the site of the Sigma Chess GUI
http://www.sigmachess.com/Hiarcs/sigmahiarcs.html

{ By the way, while MultiPV support on the Mac may be new for HIARCS and the Sigma Chess UCI GUI,
it was already there for many other Mac UCI engines and the Jose & Shredder GUIs.
I did try out HIARCS with the Sigma Chess, Jose, Scatha and Shredder GUIs on the Mac, and everything seemed to work fine. }

Dear HIARCS Chess Friends,

We have just released the new Sigma Chess 6.1.4 HIARCS 11 product.

There are two product options for HIARCS:
1) HIARCS 11 SP - Single processor edition
2) HIARCS 11 MP - Multiprocessor edition

Sigma Chess HIARCS 11 offers these great features beyond the Sigma Chess
HIARCS 10 product:

+ Massively increased chess strength.
  * On PowerPC G3/G4/G5 you will see a chess strength increase of 100+ Elo.
You can expect HIARCS 11.1 to score 70% against HIARCS 10.
  * On Intel based Macs you will see a massive increase of 200+ Elo. You can
expect HIARCS 11.1 to score 80% against HIARCS 10.

+ Search is much faster, 20-30% on Power PC G3/G4/G5 and an incredible
300-400% increase on Intel based Apple Macs!

+ Universal binary now means you can run HIARCS 11.1 natively on BOTH Intel
and PowerPC Macintosh computers.

+ Single and multiprocessor versions available so you can choose the
ultimate HIARCS to maximize your hardware!

+ Opening book is now the full tournament book and MUCH stronger than ever
before
+ Support for new MultiPV capability bringing a new dimension to chess
analysis on the Mac
+ New book and position learning capabilities means that HIARCS 11.1
improves as it plays!
+ Flexible, friendly licensing makes installation and usage very easy
+ Free updates of the HIARCS 11 series engine as they become available
+ The first engine version release is actually version 11.1 - an enhancement
on HIARCS 11.
+ MultiPV capabilities
<etc.>

A Huge Strength Improvement on my DP G5! And the interface makeover for Sigma Chess is nice as well.

So awesome, I'd recommend everyone buy it! If you have to Buy a Mac as well!

Hiarcs 10 was about equal with Fruit 2.2.1 +104 =95 -109, but so far Hiarcs 11.1 mp has yet to lose a game. Currently +8 =5 -0 against Fruit. I wonder if Deep Shredder will be coming out soon?

If you want a Mac that will do HIARCS 11.1MP justice, take a look at this:
http://www.apple.com/macpro/
Apple just announced a 8 x 3GHz MacPro!

<clearly, they were waiting until HIARCS 11.1 MP was released :D >

I did a lot of engine-engine testing on my single-processor G4s
during the beta testing. No Mac engine I tried scored as high
as 30% against HIARCS 11.1 SP, and I made it a point to run
at least 300 games against each candidate.

Since you bring up Fruit 2.2.1- I played a 400 game match, and
Fruit 2.2.1 scored just less than 28%, for -177 ELo +/- 36 Elo

Here are my results:

Code: Select all

( +0 Elo ) HIARCS 11.1 SP Mac
( -156 Elo ) Toga II 1.2 beta 2a Mac [ Scored 29.25% vs. HIARCS 11.1 SP Mac in 400 games ]
( -173 Elo ) Shredder 9.11 SP [ Scored 28.33% vs. HIARCS 11.1 SP Mac in 300 games ]
( -177 Elo ) Fruit 2.2.1 Mac [ Scored 27.88% vs. HIARCS 11.1 SP Mac in 400 games ]
( -265 Elo ) Glaurung 1.2.1 SP Mac [ Scored 21.83% vs. HIARCS 11.1 SP Mac in 300 games ]

Nice results. Now for the obvious questions...
What Time control did you use and where can I get the games?

I think I'll fire up my Winders box so I can run a match between Hiarcs and That free Rybka beta.

The time controls were 5 minutes/game,
the machines were my 867 MHz and 933 MHz G4s,
hash was 40 Mb per engine, and I used "ownbook"
for both engines with the exception of HIARCS-Shredder,
where I used the Scatha GUI book, since I couldn't figure
out an environment that would let both HIARCS and Shredder
use their own books.

As far as the games go - hmmm.

The results are a bit scattered - I ran them on two machines,
typically in batches of 50 games, and they are in several folders.
(Since these were done during beta testing).

I could scrape them together, I suppose, though it would help if there
was one particular combination you were interested in.

As far as getting them to you - I don't have a web site handy -
would email be okay, or is there a better way? If email is
the best, you can just reply to the private message I sent you
on this bbs, anyway.
