A slight modification of Toga Blueberry Finder settings finds the best move at depth=16 after 27min on my PIV 2.4Ghz. How about your favorite program?

Hello Marc,
Interesting to read about your settings! Are the changes an improvement for tactics? Are your settings meant for the 1.3x4 Toga version?

New Glaurung 2-ε/2 from Tord is not doing bad here I think, although it does not see any Nxh7 further down the line at this depth, Glaurung keeps 12.Nxe4 from ply 16, followed by 13.Nfg5, steady after 4 min 47 seconds:

Glaurung goes to Leiden!

Post by Eelco de Groot »

Latest news: Glaurung to play in the CSVN tournament in Leiden next weekend! And with no mean hardware either, operated by Hans van Mierlo, although I think Glaurung 2-epsilon/2 will only be able to use one processor of four, assuming that Glaurung 2-ε/2 will play. I don't suppose Tord has already any SMP capabilities in place for Glaurung 2-ε/2 as he is supposed to be abroad, on the run from the May festivities in Norway, and far away from any rainy weather needed for programming?

Glaurung Intel Quad X6800 Tord Romstad (prog.) Hans van Mierlo (oper.) Oslo, Norway Dussen, NL

Hi Eelco,

The changes are for tactics with the 1.2.1a version (because I find it tactically stronger than the 1.3 x4 version).

In general the modifications are simply: History Threshold = 65 and Check in Quiescence Plies = 2.

For arasan7, I have: Toga 1.2.1a = 139, Toga 1.2.1a BlueBerry Finder = 147 and Toga 1.2.1a modified Finder = 158, see the list here: http://216.25.93.108/forum/viewtopic.ph ... _view=flat

For the position here, the modified finder play Nxe4 after 7:30min (on a PIV 2.4) but intending Nxe4 Bxa1 Qh6!? (instead of the possibly stronger Ba3). With the further addition Delta Margin = 150, it plays Nxe4 intending Bxa1 Ba3!, but after 27:00 min. In general I think Delta Margin = 150 slows search too much.

PS Were you aware you had a "tribute" Toga BlueBerry compile on: http://computerchessengines.mylivepage.com/file/index

Hi Marc,

No I did not know about the tribute Toga Blueberry compile! I feel honoured! Toga Blueberry (Win-)Finder was very little tested by myself but it may be one of the better Blueberry settings for Toga 1.2.1a.

Interesting that you say that Toga 1.2.1a is better tactically than Toga 1.3x4. It could be true, just like Glaurung 1.2.1 is still better in tactics but maybe that is exactly one of the things that make these older versions a bit less strong overall, sometimes they are too much of a gambler with tactics although for Toga I think that does not apply so strongly because it does not so easily sacrifice material.

Good result for your settings! I have not tried a lot of Toga settings with more checks in plydepth, since in Gambit Fruit it seemed to hurt playing strength using 2 checks instead of one, it was too much of a slowdown, but in Pro Deo for instance it hurt much less to increase Q-Search checks going even to four I believe, and widening the Q-Search as well. Implementations were different I think.

Larger Delta Margin also has to do with a wider Q-Search but Teemu knows much more about the code from Toga, maybe he could say more about it what it actually does.

Salut! (Semi-Roman style Toga Regards)

Yes, that is what I like about the Blueberry Finder: I find it quite reliable given its aggressiveness. This suggest that it will still be strong at longer time control (or long analysis). I'll test that when I'll be back home on Friday. For Arasan7, Glaurung Mammoth scores 160/227 at 20sec on my Athlon 1.4 (see the list above) and 187/227 at 2 minutes per move. Glaurung 1.2.1 default scores 141/227 at 20 sec per movebut scores 191/227 at 2 minutes per moves! As you say, the Mammoth is probably too much of a gambler. I'll post the result for Toga 1.2.1 and BlueBerry finder when I'll have them.

I tried Q-S Checks = 2 with Gambit Fruit and I also thought this was unsuccessful; some for reasons it seems (limited testing yet) that it might be different for Toga 1.2.1a-BBF . Stay tuned!

Here are the scores (out of 226) of some engines for Arasan7 at 20sec and 2minutes per moves on my Athlon 1.4Ghz (64M hash for 20 sec and 128M for 2 minutes per move for Toga and 48M and 96M respectively for Chess Tiger 2007):

Toga 1.2.1a: (138)-200
Toga 1.2.1a BBF: (146)-188
Toga 1.2.1a mod-BBF: (158)-191

Toga 1.3 X4: (130)-194 (for comparisons purposes with Toga 1.2.1a - I haven't run "Checkov" yet)

Chess Tiger 2007 normal: (152)-187
Chess Tiger 2007 Gambit: (162)-184
Chess Tiger 2007 Gambit-Agg.: (162)-175

It seems difficult for the "aggressive" settings to maintain their tactical superiority over the regular settings as I increase the thinking time. For the engines considered here, the aggressive settings did worse at the longer time control.

Very easy for top engines in year 2020.
Recent SF on 1 core finds Nxe4! on depth 11.
SF-6 needs depth 19.

May be interesting for weaker engines ?
