Collector's Corner: Rather good match of Berlin Plus I think

Post by Georg Langrath »

I played it against Mephisto MM2 with Mephisto on Level 1 (2-5 seconds) and Beryl Plus 15 seconds. If MM2 here plays in average 3.5 seconds then Beryl Plus plays on two doubles of that. In relation to each other Beryl Plus should play on ELO of about 1500 in relation to MM2 with ELO 1673 according to SSDF.
Please don't tell me that I must play about 200 matches to get any conclusions. I do this only for fun. Here is the match:

What I can find out Beryl Plus played this match very good for a 4K chesscomputer.

nice game Georg

i like the idea of playing against different time controls to even out the rating

i realize the game was with an MMII but have you tried any of the earlier Mephisto's?

the very first Mephistos released were are of course classic computers being the first to use selective searching in the dedicated units

a good rule of thumb to always properly identify if you have a Mep I or II or III

Mep I-Brikett has only one sliding switch at the top and the program module has no special marking on the back

MepII-Brikett has two sliding switches on the top and the module is marked"Mephisto II"

Mep III-Brikett has two sliding switches on the top but the keyboard is different from Mep I and II
the Program module is marked..Mephisto III

of course it is possible to interchange the 3 different modules with the three different Briketts

also there was another module the ESB ll which was released that can work in only some especially made briketts

Thick As A Brickett Regards

It is marked Mephisto ll.
When I bought it on German ebay, I had the chance to get a stronger Mephisto Modular for about the same price. But I chose Mephisto ll because I want to have a chance to win at least on level l. I don't like to play against those "fun levels". The same reason that I chose Beryl Plus. I have had very fun matches against Beryl Plus and have won on level 3 as most. The matches against Beryl Plus are always very fun because it never plays boring IMO. But the problem with its display is so big that I have stopped playing with it so often nowadays. I hated to lean over the board to see if it was an E or F.
I had an email conversation with Eric Hallsworth before I bought Beryl Plus. He recommended Beryl Plus if you aren't too strong but want to have a dedicated that nearly never makes complete idiotic moves. He said that Beryl Plus often plays what a master player reflects on as his second or third move.
Beryl in a better board that would be something I would like to have.
