Hi Lars
happy to see you will be following the games with keen interest
:P
normally i do not like to use the user programmable levels as i do not like to guess if i should use a short move control of 40 or a long one of 99 as this will greatly effect the play by the computer
however i did not realize this option of using a ZERO for the move control
i will test Zero in two hours to see if it seems reliable

thanks for the information!

Charles

Lars's suggestion to set the London 33Mhz to ALL(Zero) in 2hrs seems to work out fine based on my testing so i can use that

i have a choice of 12 different opening book options so i will spend the next two days deciding on which ones to use
other than that i am good to go
perhaps you can give me a brief history of Telepath?
when did you first release it to the public?
what was it rated when first released and what were its major improvements since first released?
i am interested in knowing a little something about the opponent i will be facing

Steve,

Sounds like a good timing option to me.

I've not released Telepath yet. This match will help decide that.
I started work on NoonianChess in Dec 1997 and released it 2 years
later. Worked on it at an average of a few hours a week (much
more on the holidays) for 7 years. Put way too much stuff in the
position evaluator - most of the stuff I learned from reading positional
and strategic chess books for 20 years. This made it slow.

I dropped work on NoonianChess and started Telepath a year later.
Telepath was started in Jan. 2005. It participated in a CCT in Feb 2005
when the program was only 3 weeks old. It has participated in every
CCT since then. Also, it has competed in every ACCA tournament.
I've been very experimental with it in pruning ideas and eval ideas.
The key difference in the eval philosopy from that of NoonianChess
was to be a little less thorough on the number of terms in the eval
and lean more to fast and aproximate assessment for each term.
In NoonianChess, I went for slow and accurate.

Interestingly, Telepath is about half the speed of NoonianChess in
Knps, but it searches much deeper. Telepath has better endgame
knowledge than NoonianChess and a bit better middlegame knowledge.
That and deeper search is why it is much stronger than NoonianChess.
It was stronger than NoonianChess back when they both searched to
the same depth. Another key change is the additional support of UCI
which has opened up new tools for opening book development.

The biggest mistake I made in its design was emphasis on 64 bit
speed. It is 2x faster (or better) on the same machine with a 64 bit
compile. When I started the project in 2005, I thought for sure
Intel and Microsoft would have everybody on 64 bit machines and
OS's by 2008.

Here is a brief history of Telepath's results:

Code: Select all

     2005 CCT7 Tied for 41st of 44
     2006 CCT8 Tied for 37th of 38
     2007 CCT9 Tied for 47th of 52
     2008 CCT10 Tied for 20th of 36
For two months prior to that tournament I spent all my time
bug hunting and tuning the eval. I temporarily stopped
               experimenting with pruning techniques.

     2006 1st ACCA President's Tournament Tied for 7th of 18.
     2008 3rd ACCA President's Tournament Tied for 6th of 10.

     2006 1st ACCA Pan-American Champs 16th of 16
     2007 2nd ACCA Pan-American Champs 14th of 16

2007 1st ACCA World Computer Rapid Chess Champs Tied 30th of 40
2008 2nd ACCA World Computer Rapid Chess Champs Tied 20th of 36
This was a 14 round tournament - At the end of 8 rounds Telepath
was in tied for 4th but fell after that. NoonianChess finished 35th.
Since the 2008 WCRCC, I have spent more time hunting bugs. This
proved effective. My biggest progress was in 2008. After much bug
clean ups in the early part of the year, my eval and search experiments
produced higher yields with less effort. Telepath's ICC blitz rating is
currently over 100 pts higher than it was at the time of that tournament.

I hope to get a better idea of its strength out of these matches.
Most computer ratings are independent clusters and don't have a
FIDE or USCF conversion factor. ICC is the closest thing to that but
it still has many issues if you are looking for a strength indicator.

The ratings of collector's machines seem the most accurate relative
to human ratings. Thus, I hope the matches with you and Thorsten
will shed light on the topic.

Weren't you looking for programs that used UCI and had their own
books? At the end of our matches, I could supply you with the version
of Telepath that you played. It is not to be passed around. You'd be
the only one to have a copy other than me. The same offer goes to
Thorsten after we match up.

I wouldnt mind matching you online with Romichess though if you would offer me a copy of Telepath. Time control of your choice, I just have to email mike and get the latest anti-telepath goatpowered version 1.0 beta 32 bit.

You cant blame me for trying..

I don't understand what the point is in being enthralled about getting an engine? There are four hundred engines out there...

I really don't understand what the point is in keeping the engine private for a long time either other than make some geeks envious. :P

Charles

i did not realize Telepath was not yet public
thank you very much for that very interesting narrative
and i also thank you for your generous offer to provide me with a copy of Telepath after our match
i was looking for UCI Engines to be used in the Revelation but i would need the book built into the Exe file of Telepath
the UCI Server developed for the Revelation can only use books that are part of the EXE file and not a separate file
if your book is a separate file then please do not go to any time and trouble on my account to modify it as my needs will not be the needs of those using Telepath for normal PC engine use

to return the favor i offer you to choose anything you like from this doubles list of dedicated computers and auxiliary items(chess modules, printers etc etc)i have

perhaps we can make some sort of incentive challenge to you here and perhaps entice Thor to set aside his fear and angst and take up the challenge?
:P

now you can choose one item
IF you win the match against me you can choose TWO
IF you win the match against Thor's Sparky..then choose THREE
if Thor wins he can choose an item
i will bear the cost of all shipping

anyway enough of this until the time comes

Some people like to collect. For some, collecting has an aspect
of history about it. The guys that collect the computer boards can
usually quote historical facts about the subject. Lots of "good to know" info.

I have stated several reasons in the past, but I'll state a few here.
1) People can use your engine to prepare for it in a tournament.
2) People can clone it.
3) I think engines above a certain strength shouldn't be released for free!
