In 100 years Robotic versions of Rybka will roam the earth trying to wipe out the pitiful remnants of mankind. My great grandson will emerge, and challenge Rybka to a match for the fate of the world. He will win the match easily, but be accused of cheating via a radio earpiece back to a clone of LearningLemming...after which we will be slaughtered along with the rest of the humans.

100 years from now the few survivors that are left will look in disbelief as some old timer relates the time when there was a thing electricity and machine that could deliver all the knowledge ever held by mankind which included a program that could solve some game called chess!

In 100 years computer chess will exist but it won’t be programmed by humans. The computers will be learning and improving on there own. Human programming will be too slow. The first computer written chess programs in 2088 were laughable and lost very quickly. But they improved at an astounding rate of 300 points a year. By 2108 the best human written chess programs were rated 6200. The best computer written chess programs were rated over 7000. Humans stopped entering computer chess competitions as they were too embarrassed to lose every game to a computer programmed chess program. Humans continued to write chess programs but only for fun to compete against other human written chess programs. Again the computer has proven to be superior to man.

Bravo Mark, this is the best possible scenario that could realy happen in the future 8-)
The humans are no match for the computers regards,
Dr.D

P.S.BTW,will the computer authors of chess engines accuse themselves of cloning as the humans do  :?:

Computers will not make accusations of cloning because they have no egos. Again the computer shows itself to superior.
Humans will not be able to clone the computer written chess programs because the computer written chess programs will be too complex for any human to understand. They will be huge, at over 900 terabytes.

I don’t know if chess is still played in 100 years. But even today I don’t think that playing strength is the most important thing in a chess program. For years now most chess programs are too strong for a lot of human players.

More important in my opinion is the interface between the chess program and the human. I know this might sound silly now but I feel there must be something better than a board rendered on to a monitor by a 3D-engine or a pure 2D-board.
Chess is a great game but somehow it wouldn’t be bad if there would be a bit more body activity involved than just moving a mouse every now and then. Something like a gigantic (virtual) DGT-board where you can walk through, touch the pieces or look at the board from above springs to mind …

Nintendo with its wii console seems to be on the right track and I’m curious to see if someone will do a bit more than just port an existing program to that console.

Best regards
Roman

2050: Human brain fully mapped. DNA mapping already completed 5 years back but was kept secret by Genetic firms as they are pressured by the government not to disclose this codes due to national security issues.

2060: Chess Engine generator completed, thanks to Quantum computing.

2070: machine-human interfacing has been perfected, thanks to human brain mapping.
A grandmaster rated 2520 wins every game in european tournaments where he campaigned to become a super GM. A year after, he was caught by a hidden x-ray at the entrance in a playing hall. A chip implant was discovered and it was connected to a chess engine, optimised Rybka clone which was coded by a machine, running in a powerful platform. The said GM was sanctioned by FIDE and was unheard of after that incident. It was later discovered that its just part of a private firms project where a part of his prize fund (champions purse) goes to this new startup. It’s just plain business.

2075: Chessbase selling IC chips for implants.

2080: Centaur chess (Cyborg Chess) accepted in chess community.
Each chess player is racing to have an implant in order to win prestigious tournaments and the top 50 players of the planet are now Centaur/Cyborg chess players as normal humans without chip implants are no match against them.

2090: Chess Tablebases reached 22 pieces, only 10 exchange of material against centaurs and the result will be known.

2108: Implants not required, as new human brain (HB) port is perfected. Any chips can be inserted, may it be flying the dreamliner or playing chess or scrabble or just plainly reviewing the experience of your son on his vacation in Antarctica.
