Imagine a nice computer with flash RAM and a DVD RW that had a touch sensory board and a high res. OLED screen and allowed you to store 20,000 games and came with Deep Rybka 3 and a 20,000,000 position opening book. Battery life was twelve hours.

I would definitely buy it.

PS It ran Linux apps and consumed 10 watts of power.

If I can get everything on it, that I can get on the fastest pc at the momment, then I would gladly pay $200 more than the cost of the software alone.
Why not? It will save me buying a whole computer!
But I voted "no". If I had $500, I'd rather put it towards a new computer.

This is mainly the case in not having a top computer. But if I did have, then I would pay up to $100 more than cost of software.

It would be nice for a few reasons.

Actually, would it save health also?

Depends, would it have a Quad core processor? If not what processor would it have? It's all about the CPU powering Rybka ...

For $500 I very seriously doubt it would would have a quad core and if it did then the rest of the thing would have to be skimpy.

Perhaps a more reasonable $800-$1000 would suffice for a very nice wood board and set plus a good CPU, however most people would not be willing to fork over that kind of money (just as most would consider $500 too much because they "reason" that they could get better hardware or invest in better hardware for a PC).

Ted,

It would be possible to have a WiFi wood board that interfaces with a quad or higher central computer over a distance of 50 ft. or through a fast internet connection. This would probably be easy to do for less than $500.00 if we left the OLED display off. Most of the readers don't realize just how expensive OLED screens are right now.

You can buy that now. Purchase a Novag Citrine and connect it to
a PC via the USB port. Also, one can use wireless USB to connect
the two. There are videos of this setup on YouTube .

OK, Me again!
I personally am not in the market for this, but I WOULD highly consider it a worthwhile purchase (for those who are interested [me too, if it was my lifestyle]), if Rybka 3 was put into the top hardware just for the purpose of this one dedicated chess engine, And made not only very nice, or even into a chess table (as in another thread), but built to last, and not break down (atleast should be easily repairable for the next 50 years).
I think that the Rybka 3 engine is already a timeless masterpiece, and it would be very nice to have it incased in a "glass frame".
In 50 years from now, it would be a marvel, and even in 100 years from now it would still be a shining example of this era (if people will still have th brains to appreciate it!)

If it is made like this, it can be $1000, and would be much more worth it than some engines from the 1980's, made inside such a frame.

Truth is, even if it is more!

The idea is that the actual object over which this potentiial antique is built, is of timeless value, and will remain competitive, certainly vs all humans. It will also be a challenge for all programmers to try to surpass dring the next 20 years or more. Until the end of chess programming. Being that the software and hardware cannot be changed.
