Thinker GUI setup

Post by Clemens »

Hello to all friends of computerchess

a few week ago I read some interesting threads about the Thinker engine.
I decided to join an online tournament with this engine. The tournament is lasting 6 Months, one game per week timecontrol 180 +0. All top engines are in.
The tournament is held on playchess server, and so I had a lot of problems first to find a good setup for that engine, because Thinker is not pondering under CB gui.
I think pondering is an important feature, and so I made a lot of tests with different gui's and adapters for CB gui connection. I tested thinker without pondering, thinker with the shredder gui via pipe server into CB gui and thinker with WinBoard in CB gui.
The best I found so far is the setup with 2 PCs ( Nullmodem connection): on the main PC thinker works under the Arena gui with pondering, and the second PC runs the adapter and the CB gui. This works fine, and you can see the evals after each thinker move. Also you can use the books of CB gui.
Has anyone else some experiences with the thinker setup?? This would be verry interesting to me.

Are you running Thinker with the Winboard adapter?
This is not good, because everything Thinker has stored is cleared after each move, and so Thinker plays much weaker...

Ah, so that's why it's performing so strongly for me with the wb2uci adapter.

Hello Ernest

you wrote about "the WinBoard adapter". Which adapter do you mean?
The PC which runs Arena/Thinker uses the autoplayer which comes with Arena. The PC which runs the CB gui needs two adapters. The first one to install an thinker uci engine is the wb2uci adapter. The second one which connects to Arena's autoplayer is the winboard232d adapter.
So do you think I miss some performance? I copied a few lines of thinkres
output. Can you see some deleting of stored informations there?

Thanks for any help.

Hi Graham

strange answer, because wb2uci is a winboard adapter.

Hi Clemens,

Thinker is a Winboard engine, so I have to use the wb2uci adapters if I want to use it in the Fritz or Shredder GUIs.

Cheers, Graham.

Hi Graham,
Don't know if you are joking here... :?
By Winboard adapter, I meant the old ChessBase ENG adapter, which is the only way in Fritz/ChessBase GUI to obtain, for Thinker, display of evals and depth, but that performs much worse, for Thinker, than the wb2uci adapter.
See http://rybkaforum.net/cgi-bin/rybkaforu ... hl=thinker
and http://rybkaforum.net/cgi-bin/rybkaforu ... 5;hl=Lance

But you know all that...

By the way, I have seen that with Arena 2.0, you don't see the display of Thinker evals and depth. Is that true?

Hi Clemens,
Same answer than to Graham:

See http://rybkaforum.net/cgi-bin/rybkaforu ... hl=thinker
and http://rybkaforum.net/cgi-bin/rybkaforu ... 5;hl=Lance

Werner Schüle (CEGT) is a great specialist :)
See http://rybkaforum.net/cgi-bin/rybkaforu ... hl=adapter
"The old cb adapter sends a new command after each move and then all moves again. Thinker stores a lot of things during search and all these things are lost after the new command."
