Naum 4 purchase - get Win and Linux versions?

Post by royb »

I'm considering a Naum 4 purchase. I run Linux everywhere but sometimes opt for Windows binaries for performance reasons (sometimes gcc binaries yield 5-10% slower executables than an Intel compiler running on Windows).

My question is: if I buy Naum 4 can I get both sets of binaries and then choose the one that runs fastest on my system? Hopefully that's the answer but you don't know till you ask and the FAQ on the Naum site does not seem to address this.

I'll be running this under SCID if that influences anyone's thinking on this.

Thanks,

Roy

I don't have answers, only some thoughts.

You assume that the author uses intel's compiler for compiling the windows version, and gcc for the linux version? Perhaps he is using icc for the linux binary. There is no mention in Naum's site that the linux version is slower or handicapped in any way.

Besides, if you get a windows version, you will not be able to run the 64-bit version on your linux machines if you use wine, so you will be losing performance this way.

You should ask Alex himself, normally he answers very fast. Even if
you need to buy both versions I guess you can convince him of a
special deal.
E.g. I asked Alex in advance before buying, if I could get some special
pricing, if I first go for the single cpu version and later for the mp version,
because I didn't know yet when I would buy a quad machine. His answer
was positive.

Roy, you can use the address given at the Naum Chess web site.
It is in the middle of the index page after the Paypal link.
