Robert
the GUI is Arena 2.0.1
the level settings are: 40 moves in 40 min repeating,
I have set up an Arena opening book so the 1st 10 or so moves would have been generated by the GUI.
I am goung to try a match where Crafty uses its own book and report later.
Crafty-22.10 is available

The winboard protocol engine-intf.html document I have only describes
level mps time inc
if inc is zero, then this says mps moves in the time specified, then this repeats for the next time control. I have no idea what that level command Arena is sending is supposed to do, but it doesn't work correctly in Crafty I can tell you that.
I have played a ton of games with that kind of time control, using the crafty "time" command allows things like time 40/40/40/40/sd/40 which was something similar to what we used in a past WMCCC event. But using the level command I am not sure what it would think. "not moving" after move 40 makes no sense as I have never seen anything prevent it from searching...
