Glaurung and Abaia for iPhone: Release candidate version

Post by Tord Romstad »

Hi all,

I've just finished the first release candidate version of Glaurung and Abaia for the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch. For those who wonder what the differences between these two programs are: They are 100% identical, apart from the fact that they use a different default color scheme, and that Glaurung is currently only available to my beta testers, while Abaia can be downloaded by anyone with a jailbroken iPhone or iPod. If and when Apple accepts it, Glaurung will be available as a free download from the App Store.

If someone with jailbroken devices feels tempted to hunt for bugs in Abaia, information and download instructions can be found at this page. According to my test, this is clearly the strongest iPhone chess program at the market right now. Unless someone discovers some serious, easily reproducible bug within the next couple of days, I'll submit this version to Apple.

This is great news!

An open source chess engine with interface on the iPhone was
unthinkable for me. I saw the call for votes on your homepage, if
anybody would pay for a chess program on mobile devices. This was
already some time ago and even then I thought you wouldn't do it. So I
was mistaken.

If there is any chance to get it on my iPod classic I am the first that will
send a paycheck ;o)

I am running open source software on all of my devices with a processor.
The only thing I own without is this *gr* iPod and it also uses encrypted
firmware, but apple builds the finest hardware...

Well done! I hope you will receive the honour and credit, this work is
worth a lot of it.

Yours,

Oliver

I'm glad you like it! :)

I won't charge any money for it, though. It just isn't worth the trouble. The program will be available as a free download.

I'm not sure exactly what an iPod classic is, but it sounds like an older model. You'll need an iPod Touch or an iPhone to run my program.

I must admit that I have a strong and growing dislike for Apple. It's a pity that nobody else makes hardware or software which suits my needs.

Thanks! I'm doing this for fun and don't care much about honour or credit, but of course it is always nice when someone appreciates my work. :)

Everyone with an iPhone or Touch is in for a real treat. Strong program, nice interface, and beautiful graphics! Amazing that it'll be free...

100% agree, Apple are becoming like Microsoft were a few years back, although 10 times worse. I won't touch any of their hardware or software

Coincidentally, just saw this
