Black may be able to get a draw if he played 12...d5 instead but after 13. Nxd5!! white has a very strong attack.

My first instinct would certainly have been to save the queen.
Shredder 11 sees the sacrifice instantly though

Hi, I get the same results as Ray, and as S11 notes, Black is leading! So the exchange down is in Blacks favour. However, an interesting position though, thank you for sharing it :D

Crafty, Scorpio, Danasah, 'active' Thinker and 'inert' Thinker all pick e5f6. That seems to be the natural choice for any engine. But as usual, that 'passive' Thinker likes to be different and exiting, and so it picks c4f7!

The pocket versions of Hiarcs and Shredder also like 1.exf6.I think when you look at the alternatives only Bxf7+ and Qd2,Qd1, which when analysed leave White in a worse position. The final outcome is just N+N+B vs Q+P.Which in my opinion is about even. The engines I tested still think White is slightly worse considering Black has still got 2 central pawns. This would be an ideal position for testing many games from this position with a Monte-Carlo approch.

White immediatly - within six plies if we include 9...Rxg7 - gets three minor pieces for queen+pawn (and a HUGE developement advantage); the rest of the game is amusing. So this is not a queen sacrifice but a much smaller sacrifice (3*3=9, 9+1=10 by simple material counting). If so much material comes back "directly", then I don't think it makes sense to call it a queen sacrifice.

Could somebody post the analysis of Rybka 3? I don't think it's a good idea to give up your queen in trade for three pieces. Besides white is gonna lose its pawn on g7 as well.

Also, It's difficult to get into attack mode with three of your pieces without queen. You don't often initiate the checkmate threat with those three minor pieces. So I'm with Ray on this one.

It's opening theory and this type of trading is often seen in GM games.

White's position is winning although black may be able to get a draw in a few variations.
