TJshogi is the only one I am aware of, and it might very well be the only WB shogi engine so far. I plan to build one myself, but haven't got to it yet.

There also is no adapter yet that allows you to play USI engines under WB (like Polyglot allows UCI engines to play under WB, and UCCI2WB allow playing of UCCI engines).

The best interface for Shogi is:
http://home.arcor.de/Bernhard.Maerz/BCMShogi/

There are lots of engines for it.
Here are the results from the latest championship:

I don’t think there are a lot of engines for BCMShogi. I think only 2 of the 8 programs in the finals will run under BCMShogi.
Another USI interface is shogidokoro. It is at http://www.geocities.jp/shogidokoro/index.html
It has links to 7 programs available to run under the USI interface.

If you want the strongest program then use a USI interface. The strongest program is GPS Shogi and it runs under the USI interface.
I think GPS Shogi is open source so you can add support for Winboard to GPS Shogi.

GPS Shogi --> USI compiliant
Otsuki Shogi --> private engine
Monju --> private engine
KCC Shogi (North Korea) --> private engine
Bonanza --> USI compliant
Gekisashi --> I am not sure about this one (Nagoya Institute of Technology project, I think)
YSS --> commercial shogi engine
Shueso --> Akira Takeuchi (Kyushu Institute of Technology)

These are USI:
Blunder
GPSshogi
Laramie
Spear
ssp
TJshogi

This works as USI with the adapter u2b:
Bonanza & u2b

While we are on the subject of Shogi. How strong is the strongest program compared to humans? Has the computer finally reached professional level?

I think that in 2009 there was a jump in playing strength as seen by this year's computer tournament. 4 programs defeated the top 3 programs returning from last year. A great defeat to last year's winners and a great victory to this year's winners. The floodgate computer server ratings are going up. But in 2009 there was only 1 computer versus human shogi game. The computer lost to an amateur in a 1-hour game. But the program was not one of the new stronger programs.

Someone should enter GPS Shogi on 1 of the servers where people play like on Shogi Club 24. Then we can get a rating for the best program. Would today's top program reach number 50 on shogi club 24? Its strange none of the current strong programs play on the Shogi club 24. Any of these programs could claim to be the strongest by being rated highest on Shogi Club 24.

How far is the computer from conquering the hardest chess variant?

Weak club player.

You may be right as there is no hard data to contradict you. Care to make a prediction when the computer will reach professional level? I don’t mean top professional but professional class C2. How do you think we will know? As pros don’t play computers.
