960 Engine on Playchess

Post by IWB »

Hello all,

I was complaining several times that there is no engine possible in the Playchess 960 Engine room. Yesterday I have learned that I am wrong (Thanks MF)

1. You need a 960 capable Engine (e.g: http://www.computerchess.org.uk/ccrl/404FRC/)

2. You have to search for the right Engine.uci file. At W7 and Vista it can be found here:
C:\Users\Ingo\AppData\Roaming\ChessBase\Engines.UCI
At this directory you have to open the corrosponding Enginename.uci file and add the following line if it doesnt already exist:
[OPTIONS]
UCI_Chess960=true

3. Start Playchess, under "Thematic Chess" choose the "Chess 960 engines" room.

4. Load you engine as usual and you can start.

All those who are dont want to compete with the "booknerds" there and want to see theri Engine play. No more transisitons from the book into the endgame databases. No more 30 move deep traps which are impossible to see for an engine. Another advantage is that the 100 Rybkas in the Main Engine room lose 50% of their advantage. it is now just the engine and the hardware (which is overestimated) and the winning ratio should come back to more normal values - and might get even better with longer time controls for some engines.

Well done Ingo and to MF for explaining it all to you. Let's try and get some 960 tournaments on Playchess could be a lot of fun.

Thx, but for a tourney it is too early.

At the moment there are some obstacles. For example some engines are not running as they should.

Running are: Shredder, Fritz960, Sjeng, Hiarcs, Glaurung, Bright 0.4a3, Rybka. Some others give trouble with castling - even if they should be able to play 960.

Another thing is that it seems that the opening position is only changing every 24h. that is a bit boring.

The good thing is that there is a biggr variaty of engines than in the main engine room and just a few blitz, the majority plays 16 10!

Fascinating ! I never knew they had introduced a chess960 engine room
Sadly I don't have a current playchess subscription, mine expired long ago. I can still log on, but with "limited functionality" I don't think I can play engine matches

The room has been there for many years - every couple of years it gets mentioned on the forums there is interest for a while then it dies again. Maybe this time......

It might die again because there are some problems, either beause of Engine or of GUI. Mostly related to castling. And then there is the problem with the fixed opening for 24h.

I send some emails - all I can do now is crossing fingers

The one position for 24 hours is a major problem. But now you have MF on board there must be a solution to this that will not take a lot of programming effort from him.

Hello all,

FYI: With some luck the "24h the same opning" will be replaced by a random 960 opening for every game soon.

Hopefully this is improving the attractivity of the room even more.

I dont see a big mistake by white, it just seems that Hiarcs simply got strangulated slowly.

I can only ask everyone who is interested in 960 or who is anoid in running into book traps, doesnt want to see games which go from the book directly to the edngame or is not interested to see book lines which go completly into the mate (I have seen all thoose), to be and stay at that room as often as possible. If it is empty there the room will be dead very soon again.

Haev a nice day
Ingo
