White plays Rc7...!

RISC takes 7 ply......9 min. 42 sec.

Mach 3..........takes 8 ply....about 9 hours to find...!

wow, i would fall out of my chair if a dedicated played such a move. idea of course is 1. Rc7 Nxc7 2. h6 Qc1+ 3. Kh2 Qd2 4. Qxg8+ Kxg8 5. h7+ Kf8 6. h8=Q#

only two (modern computer) engines i tried could find the move by depth 8, those being the obvious candidates of bright & rybka. (of course, people say rybka's depth is artificial so that may be with a grain of salt). stockfish was 2nd fastest, at depth 9. even HIARCS was one of the slower ones, i beileve taking until depth 11 or 12 to find the move. none matched RISC's depth of only 7. this was all on multiple cores which couldve helped or hampered the search, depending.

I'm impressed Risc found it so quickly! The time for the Mach 3 doesn't surprise me. I bet the Novag Forte "C' might beat that time. Haven't checked.

I would consider the tactics to be medium to medium hard difficulty, easy for top software and hardware. Not so for dedicateds.

Then the Forte "C" won't find it either.

Hi Steve......What a great collection you have.......well, I think the Saitek Cougar should find the move....if you have the time....we can compare the result to the RISC 2500...

I "predict" about 7 or 8 ply for Cougar to find it....

Thanks....

Sadly Rob
the Cougar doesn't find Rc7 even after 40 min and 9 ply
it prefers to play Rb1

Toothless Cougar Regards
