Dann Corbit wrote: This is some interesting analysis, and I will look into it. Since the key idea remains valid (offer of simplification) it may be an excellent alternative. The score also seems similar to the value I have stored for the key move.
Thanks Dann and Swami! I would be interested in the results also for my own testing of the Rainbow Serpent :) I hope the result can be verified. I ran the position again with build No. 5 which finds Bd2 a bit later and Bb2 earlier. It keeps this, all through 28 plies deep. Bd2 however seems to drop from the first choices to somewhere halfway on the movelist, but this is not very accurate information about what the actual evaluation is, the null window search may just take relatively little nodes because the moves are well ordered.

I had no patience to wait for iteration 29, it might have taken several hours more for the first result of Bb2 at that depth.
Debugging is twice as hard as writing the code in the first
place. Therefore, if you write the code as cleverly as possible, you
are, by definition, not smart enough to debug it.

[D]1r2r1k1/5pp1/R2p3n/3P1P1p/2p2PP1/1qb2B1P/Q7/2BR1K2 b - - bm Bd2; id "STS(v7.0) Simplification.009"; c0 "Bd2=10, Bb2=5, Bb4=5, hxg4=3";

To help Dann a bit :) two more tries at the position, for a while I thought the results were badly influenced because Rainbow Serpent was up to now basically Stockfish 1.5, and I had not yet updated to the 1.5.1 sources which are more different than I thought :) I had forgotten there were some problems with the first 1.5 version.

But it now seems that it does not make a great deal of diference here except the 1.5.1 version chooses Bd2 and not Bb2. The two moves seem both to lead to a draw though so in the end the choice is moot. The eval after Bb2 with the latest Stockfish 1.5.1 based Rainbow Serpent is very close to that after Bd2.

Result with Stockfish 1.5

And running in parallel the position after 1... Bb2, the score fluctuates but in the end is very similar to that for 1... Bd2.

Bb2 gets -0.56 from White's point of view, compared to +0.60-- for Bd2, Black point of view.

Debugging is twice as hard as writing the code in the first
place. Therefore, if you write the code as cleverly as possible, you
are, by definition, not smart enough to debug it.

I think I have a new best move for
1r2r1k1/5pp1/R2p3n/3P1P1p/2p2PP1/1qb2B1P/Q7/2BR1K2 b - - bm Bd2; id "STS(v7.0) Simplification.009"; c0 "Bd2=10, Bb2=5, Bb4=5, hxg4=3";
Dann :) But still running and I hope it gets to 27 plies because Rainbow Serpent only found the new move at 25.40, 25 plies deep, move 40 from 47 in the move-list. Interested to see if Rybka or Naum agrees with Stockfish or Rainbow Serpent.

Debugging is twice as hard as writing the code in the first
place. Therefore, if you write the code as cleverly as possible, you
are, by definition, not smart enough to debug it.

Hello Jarkko,

Thanks for all the analysis,
I'm just a little curious, what engine you are using? A modified Toga or something else?

Regards, Eelco
