JVMerlino wrote:Thanks again for another very useful test! I've been considering putting in code to recognize simplification (at least a very simple ratio of material), so this is very timely.

My latest version of Myrddin got 40 positions correct, and 560 points.

My goal is to make Myrddin average 60 correct solutions and 700 points per test suite. Including this new one, Myrddin's only averaging 49 solutions and 618 points -- so still some work to go.

Thanks again!

jm
You're welcome. I hope you enjoy the test suites a great deal. :)

I'm looking forward to Myrddin's progress. I believe recent versions have shown signs of improvement. 618 points out of 1000 average is obviously good.
Please feel free to add Myrddin's scores to your "Test Results" page, although those results might have been done by you using identical hardware. It would be good to have lower-rated engines in that list, for the programmers like myself who are using your tests as benchmarks not only for improvement but also for comparison against other programs.

Additionally, on the test results, it would also be nice to know the partial scores out of 1000.

Many thanks,
jm

Since the given solution is the same, I guess you are puzzling about the negative score. I imagine that whatever engine you are using is scoring from the viewpoint of white because there is a clear advantage for black with this position.

Dann :) But still running and I hope it gets to 27 plies because Rainbow Serpent only found the new move at 25.40, 25 plies deep, move 40 from 47 in the move-list. Interested to see if Rybka or Naum agrees with Stockfish or Rainbow Serpent.

The new move is 1... Bb4! Chosen by Rainbow Serpent Build 008, it holds even after 29 plies. Build 007 would probably have switched to this move as well, and the evaluation is still all the same as in Stockfish but I did not let build 007 run long enough, I noticed it was pondering this move though after some 1200 minutes.

Not that it means a lot if the leaf-positions also are a draw but the move is likely to be at least as good as the other candidates. The score for the other moves, especially Bd2 in this case seemed to drop a bit faster in this build, it may be just a coincidence but I'm happy with it if it helps detecting a draw earlier or hopefully in this case a positionally bit better move.

If you let Rybka calculate longer I think the 1.11 score for Bd2 should drop and Jarkko's analysis should not be much different from that, the analysis he posted bears out that it is very close to Rybka's :) I think -1.08 was from White's point of view.

Debugging is twice as hard as writing the code in the first
place. Therefore, if you write the code as cleverly as possible, you
are, by definition, not smart enough to debug it.

Your time scale is much slower than mine (I gave only 7200 seconds for Rybka and 3600 seconds for Naum). So I will need to run over longer time scale. Some other engines also agreed, but (again) I did not dedicate the same huge slab of time that you did.

When there is a difference of opinion with equal analysis time, I trust Rybak over Naum, and Naum over anyone else below that. But your time scale is much longer so I will have to pound the everlasting stuffings out of it to be sure.

JVMerlino wrote: Please feel free to add Myrddin's scores to your "Test Results" page, although those results might have been done by you using identical hardware. It would be good to have lower-rated engines in that list, for the programmers like myself who are using your tests as benchmarks not only for improvement but also for comparison against other programs.

Additionally, on the test results, it would also be nice to know the partial scores out of 1000.

Many thanks,

Sure, I will update the test results section at the site in month's time after doing bunch of tests with other divisions, I have only finished 2 divisions so far, there's some 10 more to go. :)

I'm still not sure what to think of this one. Stockfish does change it's mind to the Serpent move (of course R.S. is in the Stockfish lineage). However, Rybka and Naum never waver from the key move, and get stronger and stronger scores. I think my next move will be to force the key move for both positions and analyze that position. Sometimes, after forcing a key move, the truth comes to light.

Aussi, Aussis, Aussie, oy, oy, oy! {veiled R.S. reference}

[d]1r2r1k1/5pp1/R2p3n/3P1P1p/2p2PP1/1qb2B1P/Q7/2BR1K2 b - -

Rybka analysis:
1r2r1k1/5pp1/R2p3n/3P1P1p/2p2PP1/1qb2B1P/Q7/2BR1K2 b - - bm Bd2; ce 114; pv Bd2 Qxb3 Rxb3 Ra3 Bxc1 Rxb3 cxb3 Rxc1 b2 Rb1 Re3 Kf2 Rb3 Ke2 Kh7 f6 hxg4 hxg4 gxf6 Be4+ Kg7 Bc2 Rb4 Kd3 Nxg4 f5 Kh6 Kc3 Rb5 Bb3 Kg5;
Naum analysis:
1r2r1k1/5pp1/R2p3n/3P1P1p/2p2PP1/1qb2B1P/Q7/2BR1K2 b - - bm Bd2; ce 83; pv Bd2 Qxb3 Rxb3 Ra3 Bxc1 Rxb3 cxb3 Rxc1 b2 Rb1 Re3 Kg2 Rb3 Bd1 Rb4 Kf2 Kf8 f6 gxf6 gxh5 Nf5 Be2 Kg7 Ke1 Ng3 Kd2 Nxe2;
Stockfish analysis before switching to the new choice from Bd2:
1r2r1k1/5pp1/R2p3n/3P1P1p/2p2PP1/1qb2B1P/Q7/2BR1K2 b - - bm Bd2; ce 64; pv Bd2 Qxb3 Rxb3 Ra3 Rxa3 Bxa3 Bxf4 Rd4 Bh2 Rxc4 Re3 Bb4 Rxf3+ Kg2 Rf4 Rc8+ Kh7 Bxd6 Rxf5 Bxh2 Rxd5 gxh5 Rd2+ Kg3 Nf5+ Kf4 Rxh2 Kxf5 Rxh3;

It is interesting that Rybka and Naum agree exactly on the sequence through:
Bd2 Qxb3 Rxb3 Ra3 Bxc1 Rxb3 cxb3 Rxc1 b2 Rb1
Whereas Stockfish differs after Qxb3 Rxb3 Ra3

I am not enough of a chess expert to examine these pvs and see who is right. I will have to ask the mechanical titans to ferret deeper.

One suggestion:

Offer these things in another format than "RAR". Not everyone runs windoze. A tarball (.tar), a zip archive (.zip) or most any common archive format would do, but not RAR.

One other note.

I found a link from Dann to a .zip, which is great. But for God's sake, leave out the spaces in file names. Even windows Vista has recognized that that is a lousy idea, and gotten rid of those ugly spaced-out default directories.
