Re: Speaking of passed pawns, Rybka has a Morphy moment

Post by Dann Corbit »

The Morphy moment is this move:
[d]4rk2/1pp2pp1/3q4/3P4/p1PPB2b/P4P2/6PP/Q1B3K1 b - - bm f5!!;
Your engine should see a score of at least + 2 full pawns. Some engines have a score of +7 pawns in less than a minute, and some engines simply can't find it.
Moves Qa6, Qb6 lead to a slight advantage and get a grade of C-
Move Kg8 is drawish and gets a grade of D-

Post by yanquis1972 »

it seems like a very simple tactic so i must be underthinking it -- how is it possible for engines to have trouble with it? it seems to be the first move they consider and then they move off, so there must be a secondary tactical shot i'm not seeing.

ah - found it 1..f5 2.Bd2 3.fxe4 3.Bb4 pinning queen to king.

haha, looking at the PGN now, yes that is quite a gorgeous finish.

When I was watching the game live, I saw Rybka's eval spike and it seemed like fool's gold to me (because I did not understand the position). But the eval just climbed and climbed and eons later Toga realized he was meat on a hook.
