Winning score?

Post by David Dahlem »

Interesting position, a "White to Win" study by Skuja & Giese. On my slow machine, Stockfish 1.6.3s takes almost 1-1/2 hours to show a winning score.

What's blacks best response to c6?

Hi David,

how slow is your machine? :-) I know you used a 32-bit OS you mentioned somewhere here, but i don't Ghz and Hash size.
I have 2Core at 3.0 GHz

My machine is a Dual Intel Pentium D 3.00 GHz with 2048 MB. I was using 1024 mb hash on this position.

Re: Winning score?

Post by mhalstern »

I left gaviota Running for 46 hours to see if it could find a winning score. I finally sees some positive value for c6 after 31 hours with +/= (0.40) after 20 ply. I was going to let it run for a few more days to get another ply or 2, but I accidentally clicked somewhere in the Fritz GUI, causing the search to be started over. Ahhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!

I am running the Gaviota 0.74.12 64 - The 64 bit Version on my I7-920 2.67 ghz. I was hoping for a better score as I like supporing Gaviota, because of Miguel's Tablebase Work. I'll past the eval, then the Gaviota Log File.

I have a few questions for Miguel:

Also, why does the eval show the same 1406mN searched from ply 18 through ply 20? The log file clearly shows more positions searched with each additional ply.

Also, the final eval, with the score of (0.40), only shows c6 as the starting move. Why dosen't it show the rest of the line it is considering?

As an observation, I know tfrom thje faq, that Gaviota does not use a full 100% cpu, even though it is mpu, however, during the long search, there were many instances (I never checked for more than 2 or 3 minutes of a time) of only 25% usage. I Know that the cores = 4 line in gaaviota.ini.txt works, as I sometimes saw 70% cpu. usage.

I also wonder, have I set a word record for the most plies reached by gaviota?

Eval paste:

Interesting position, a "White to Win" study by Skuja & Giese. On my slow machine, Stockfish 1.6.3s takes almost 1-1/2 hours to show a winning score.

What's blacks best response to c6?

Re: Winning score?

Post by michiguel »

mhalstern wrote:I left gaviota Running for 46 hours to see if it could find a winning score.

That must be something related to the GUI. I wonder whether variable of 32 bits in Fritz overflew or something like that. As you say, you can see that the nodes in Gaviota keep increasing in the log. Gaviota has all 64 bit counters, so they are not going to overflow in this millenium. I am still going to check to make sure there is no other problem from Gaviota's side.

Also, the final eval, with the score of (0.40), only shows c6 as the starting move. Why dosen't it show the rest of the line it is considering?
It is "failing high". You may see the score of 0.40 with a smiley, which means that Gaviota is saying, "I know I can get at least 0.40, but it is higher than that, I feel happy, I smell something really good".
Since the evaluation fell out of the window that was expected, It is not possible to know the PV. Those were thrown out in the previous iterations as "too optimistic". Now Gaviota realizes that those lines were not too optimistic (hence, the smiley), but the PVs are lost. Gaviota needs to recalculate them and it was in the process of doing it. From the log, it looks like some potential lines could reach up to ~ +1.49

As an observation, I know tfrom thje faq, that Gaviota does not use a full 100% cpu, even though it is mpu, however, during the long search, there were many instances (I never checked for more than 2 or 3 minutes of a time) of only 25% usage. I Know that the cores = 4 line in gaaviota.ini.txt works, as I sometimes saw 70% cpu. usage.
There are some brief periods of time in which Gaviota uses only one core. That is when it is examining lines close to the principal variation and close to the tips. Generally, it is a short period of time (~5%) compared to the rest of the search, but when you search for such a long time, it could become very visible. It one iteration takes 10 hours, you may see that the first 0.5 hour is using one core. Gaviota's SMP is very simple by design, which helped me to get it up and running with very few growing pains. It is not as elaborated as other people's, but it works and it is clearly better than nothing. The speed up is 1.6x with two cores and it looks like it may increase 60% for each extra core (but this is not tested). Crafty claims 70%, which is one of the most efficient implementations around. So, I am not very disappointed with Gaviota's parallel search. Since it is proving to be stable, I plan in the future to work on improving it. I need to buy quad first :-)

I also wonder, have I set a word record for the most plies reached by gaviota?
You certainly did :-)

Miguel
PS: Thanks for you support!
