Could it be because there is no mate if black plays 2. .... Ke4?

Of course it does, duh! I was blinded by the great big 0.00 score I have in this position.
This position is way too deep for my little PC.

By starting at the end of the main line, and analyzing backwards, Spark 0.3a sees the mate. But that's cheating.
4. Bd6 is the move that engines seem to choke on.

Re: Caterpillar position
I wondered if an older program might have better luck since it wouldn't have as advanced pruning, so I tried Nimzo 8.
Analysis by Nimzo 8:
1.Nf2+ Ke5 2.Nd3+ Ke6 3.Nc5+ Ke5 4.Bd6+ cxd6 5.Re7+ Qe6 6.Rxe6+
+- (3.49) Depth: 23/44 03:46:22 51262mN

Hi,
Well you know that Popeye is not that good in solving long orthodox mates. Popeyes specialities are: helpmates, helpstalemates and serieshelpmates as you can read here:
http://web.telecom.cz/vaclav.kotesovec/hppopeye.htm
and here:
http://web.telecom.cz/vaclav.kotesovec/hppopeye.htm
Nevertheless I bet it is still faster than Mate 2.xx by ChessBase
