As White, would you prefer to play this position or to play the standard position with Pc7 removed?
I think that a very strong chess engine will win almost every game with a one pawn advantage against a peer.
Almost every game means 95%, let's say? That is 600 Elo, more or less? Isn't this too much for a pawn handicap?

Alex
My previous estimate was 90%, and it was a back of the envelope wild guess.

I am going to test it, of course, now that chess experts have made me curious.

After 17 games it's still +2/-0/=15 for white. As it looks now, even 60% is pure SF. This starting position is almost drawish. :)

If you run the games fast enough, the computers will make enough blunders to render the pawn advantage moot fairly often.

I am running at 7 minutes + 7 seconds using Stockfish with 4 threads at 3 GHz

True, however, 3min/game on 2 threads at 2.1Ghz with FB1.2 is roughly +150(difference between FB1.2 and SF1.6.3)-230(difference in TC)-50(difference in threads)-20(difference in processor speed)=150 elo weaker than your setup.
150elo is not that much more blunders (I would say accounting for 5% more wins max) ;).

Yes, I am becoming more and more interested in this simple looking chess problem.

From watching the first game, I am beginning to think that my one pawn estimate was over optimistic, so it is quite likely that you are right.

Actually, if it does turn out that this opening is drawish, then it is a fantastic opening for black. Maybe Uri has invented a new dynamite sensation!

In the first game, right now black is up one full piece.

I just started it on Rybka in 3'+3'' and in the first game already black is defending beautifully.
I personally taught it would be around 60% for white, but after seeing couple of games I'm more and more amazed.

Re: can chess program see win for white after e4 h6 d4 a5?

Post by Uri Blass »

Thanks for your results

I do not believe that this opening can be good for black so I suspect that the time control is not long enough.

I thought about time control of at least 120/40 when I said long time control but of course what you do is better than nothing.

I suspected that you will not get always wins for white at fast time control but I did not expect black to win so it is possible that my estimate is wrong.

So far, it is one win for black and one draw.
I am utterly astounded. Such an ugly looking opening for black looks like it came from a 2 year old, and yet white cannot take advantage thus far. We will see how it looks in the morning after the smoke clears.
