hgm wrote:The magic word that makes all the difference in the world, and makes WinBoard really incomparable to things like ChessBase or even Arena, is: open source. When you need a feature, and WinBoard does not have it yet, you just add it, and the next day you have a GUI that is again perfect for what you want. You are entirely in control of things, and there is literally nothing that you cannot do.

So using WinBoard makes you feel like a God.
Using Arena makes you feel like a King.
Using ChessBase makes you feel like a customer.

Need I say more...
You need not say more, but I must say that I do not understand programming. :(
I know that Eelco have fun programming Stockfish, it seems to be very good.

Well, not being able to program is definitely a handicap, which would reduce WinBoard users to demi-god status: they would have to ask daddy Zeus before they could enjoy their god-like privileges. But if their ideas are good, they are usually implemented quite quickly, often within 24 hours.

Well, if you promise me a demi-god status, I will
make a Winboard experience, Muller :D. I have not had
good ideas lately, I'm getting old. :(

Muller, the ChessBase gui visual (mainly) and Aquarium are better
then the Winboard and Arena visual. That makes a big difference,
at least for me.

Me too, but the Chessbase support leaves a lot to be desired at times. I had a issue not to long ago with activation (CB10), that made me wonder why have activation if you do not have enough staff to support it. But anyway ...

I am not sure what you mean by 'visual better'. The screen layout of WinBoard is completely user configurable, because almost everything is in separate windows (so you can also close that what you do not need). For the piece design the user has choice from a multitude of chess fonts, and for the board texture any user supplied bitmap can be used as alternatives to the marble and wood textures that are supplied with the download. E.g.

to show something outlandish. Can you be more specific about what visual aspect of ChessBase you like, that WinBoard doesn't have?

Actually there seems to be a bug in WinBoard that allows you to make it full screen (using some context menu evoked from the task bar). Never tried it myself.

But my screen isn't square, so a full-screen Chess board would be heavily distorted. (Even Courier Chess would be unnaturally wide on my laptop screen.) So whyever would anyone want that? :?

Anybody should be able to find something for his/her own taste here:
