Test position, hard for Stockfish easy for others

Post by Kim Jensen »

Analysing my own games with Stockfish 1.7.1 zugzwang detection on, with 1024Mb hash and 2 threads(T2400 1.83Ghz) I found this position which seems easy for humans and most engines but hard for Stockfish

[D]3r3k/p4pp1/1p6/3p4/3b1B2/PP6/4rPPP/1R3RK1 b - - 0 24

Bc3 is easy to spot for humans because it closes the 2 out of 3 open/semiopen files for rooks and controls e1 - giving black complete control with his rooks.

Stockfish needs alot of depth(at least 30 ply) before "seeing" this move, unfortunately Jose doesnt show the depth on the analysis lines.

Stockfish needs alot of depth(at least 30 ply) before "seeing" this move, unfortunately Jose doesnt show the depth on the analysis lines.
well, not that obvious imo,as black gives up pressure on f2

well it may be a little high, but I think its very close to winning for black because white have no active play.

but great to see your engine gets it :)

Well it gives up pressure but gains total control of 2 files and makes black the only one having active rooks that can penetrate to second rank.

So I think its kind of obvious, but maybe its a transformation of advantages thing.

Well, white cannot move a rook to e1 due to Bxf2.
shredder still does not show a big eval diff between the moves
