Please release versions of Arena for Linux / Mac

Post by Ponti »

I mean, without the need to use Wine or other Win emulator...

I`d be glad to test both!

Hi,

A Linux version was planned but Martin chnaged his mind. Wine is good enough and also VMWare Fusion 2.0 for Mac, see news item 163, 168 respectivly.

Not sure if I should post this.

I have already sent an email regarding the problem I was having on 2.0.1 still occuring in 2.4.0

Also, on 2.0.1, the following happens:

I start analyzing, play e4 e5, stop analysis, and manually play Nf3 and I get the following.

It is not Arena.

We recommend that you use an engine that works.

But perhaps it would be a good idea to have Arena print the offending move, in case it gets an illegal one.

Hello Luis,

Seems like a broken communication between Arena and Houdini.
1) Which Houdini version are you using?
2) Can you describe in detail how you obtain the error? I need to know exactly what buttons you click or what keys you type.

Thanks for your time,
Robert

I don`t agree that "Wine is good enough". Winw needs Windows to be installed in a separate partition. It happens that I have some machines formatted only with Linux partitions. No Windows. It makes me feel like I live in a free world

The other way you said to run it costs at least US$50 . Maybe requires to install Windows too, as it is an emulator.

Why not write it in code that is not dependent to the OS, like Stefan did, Shredder has many versions - but of course it is not free :(

IMHO that would give Arena a market advantage, as it could be used in other computers like Mac or Linux.

Database functions could be improved too...

Wine does not require any Windows installation.

Wine does not require Windows in a Linux system. Arena runs without flaws under Linux. There is absolutely no need for a Linux Arena and if it is created, then it will require Linux engines to run which won't be good to think about. Linux engines are very few.

Actually you could still run Windows engines under wine with Linux Arena. Plus, you could run any Linux engine.
