What is the fastest way for the win? DR4 with tablebases says g5 with +15.12 whereas SF says its Bf7 with a score of +89.09. Btw Kramnik could not find the winning line and consequently the game was drawn. Below is the full game.

Seems you've speeded up SF a bit, since you outsearched my 8 threads on a 2.26GHz Nehalem Mac Pro:
It could perfectly well be random noise. A 8x2.26 GHz is less than two times faster than a 4x2.8 GHz (even more so when you consider parallel search overhead), and there is a large degree of randomness in a parallel search. It is not at all unusual that the time to a given depth varies by a factor of much more than 2 if you search the same position twice. It is therefore very possible that if we both tried SF again on the same position, yours would be much faster than mine.

on that note, national12 on the rybka forum compared a dual 3.6ghz skulltrail with an i7 overclocked to 4ghz. the i7 was the faster of the two. no idea how the math works out there, but those were the results.

Kramnik is a very skilled endgame player, so I'm surprised he didn't win this. But these unbalanced material endings are tricky.

What SF gives as a final PV is dead wrong (SF obviously has a problem with this position, something that should not be pruned is pruned and if I were part of SF team I would search for the bug). Ke2 in ply 8 is just a weak move. The best reply for black is Kg2. Even after that in PV line there are couple more weak replies from black king.

Kramnik didn't see a win coz there is no win, at least not a clear one and if you see some after the analysis of your engine, then your engine has a problem.

And btw. g5 is not the best move. Ke4 is. ;)

This is impossible since black king is on d2 in the start position. Your starting FEN is wrong.
You are right, the above analysis is for 69. g5 (which still wins), not for 68. g5 (as in the original post). Thanks for pointing out my mistake.
What SF gives as a final PV is dead wrong
Of course it is. A remotely correct PV here would be almost miraculous, as SF's PVs aren't really PVs, but just a chain of best moves/refutations from the transposition table. Combined with SF's MTD(f)-like search with tiny aspiration windows and lots of re-searches with varying windows, you're pretty much guaranteed to get nonsense PVs at high search depths in positions with lots of transpositions, like this one. The score and best move are correct, the PV is junk.
(SF obviously has a problem with this position, something that should not be pruned is pruned and if I were part of SF team I would search for the bug). Ke2 in ply 8 is just a weak move. The best reply for black is Kg2. Even after that in PV line there are couple more weak replies from black king.
There is no problem. 68. g5 and 69. g5 both do win for white (other moves may also win), and SF's "proven win" scores are entirely correct. You should be able to easily confirm this with any strong engine. According to ChessBase's article, Hiarcs with tablebases even announces mate after 69. g5. I'm sure other programs with tablebases also do.

I followed this game live on ChessBomb, and was amused when people said things like "computers don't understand such positions even when using tablebases; this is an easy draw, despite the huge scores given by the computer". Even Shipov wrote something along these lines in his live comments. This is funny because this is precisely the type of position which is very easily solved by computer programs, even without tablebases. It is very easy to prove a win for white at move 68 and 69, and very easy to prove a draw a couple of moves later.

It is not strange that chess players who are not very knowledgeable believe that such positions are difficult for computers, but I am more than a little surprised that people on this board believe the same. Trust me, these positions are really easy for a computer. There are no bugs, white is simply completely winning.
