A new Aristarch or a new SOS would be excellent news.

Will you fix the hashsizebug in SPIKE 1.4?

Post by Thomas Lagershausen »

first thx for sharing your engine with us.

I hope you will fix the handling of the hashsize by Spike 1.4.

It takes 206MB Hash if you choose 128 MB Hash and increase to 252 MB by running.

OS: XP 64bit

GUI:Arena 3.0

Thx for all.

Hi,

there is (afaik) no hash bug in Spike. The size is coming from a hudge sparsely filled mapping table used in eval. As it is sparsely filled there is no drawback for cache usage.
It´s not too hard to reduce the size, but it allows us to add special eval terms easier. We don´t expect a big drawback as today´s computer memory is much larger as the table itself.

Yesterday I played a few games of 3 min with Spike 1.4 at Playchess. Don´t have has the same strength of the main engines, but I think the new versions may surprise us.
Thanks for the new version.
Edit: Very good in test suites

Hi,

yes, we don´t reach stockfish strength. We had several years without much development and we are not on bitboards thus we don´t profit from 64bit processors.

I don't know why, but certain engines just fascinate me, and I develop a fondness for them. I always was fascinated by that funky MTD(f) search that SOS has. When I play SOS against other programs, I'm more fixated on SOS's PV display than I am at the position on the board. And Aristarch... I dunno, I think I saw more stock h7 sacrifices coming from that program than from any other. I guess I like engines with "personality".

Don't tell Vincent about my crush on SOS.
