An engine for beginners?

Post by kaissa »

Hello,

I need a chess engine that will play so weak that a beginner should have a chance once in a while. It should not play like 2600 for some time and then drop a rook. I need it to play at 1000-1400 all the way. Any chance?

Thanks for your time,

Probably Chessmaster would be best for beginners. You can lower the rating down to 1elo in the personality section.
A 1000elo is pretty weak with Chessmaster.

Also Chessmaster has a lot of training exercises for beginners and a kids section.

OV,

I use Chess Titans that comes with Windows Vista and Windows 7 Home Premium OS.

It plays at the 1400 elo level. It doubles as an indicator of sleep deprivation. You will lose to it if you are very sleep deprived.

You're actually right: Rybka doesn't play like a 2600... but more like a 3200 ^^

@O. Veli:
The previous versions of my Engine, Prédateur, were worth about 1500 Elo. An interesting challenge for any woodpusher in its way to mastery. :) I suggest you download for instance Prédateur 0.1.5 on my website (click on the "www" button under my post). Don't try yet the latest version, as it's around 2000 Elo.

You can set the ELO option of Rybka to 1200 and it will be reasonably weak.

But nothing can surpass Chessmaster at ability to play intentionally bad chess

That's one reason i don't care for Chessmaster and some of the other
ones that you can set to play at a low rating. You can see the bad
moves and that sort of messes up the game for me. I prefer to play
strong engines and - a Rook or Knight. They still play strong and make
good moves. You also have a good chance of beating them in the end
game.

Regarding the Chessmaster personalities, there are some that blunder their way to a 1000-1400 rating, and others play more "human-like". In that rating range, I would say that the following personalities play "reasonable chess" (from weakest to strongest).

Willow
Joey
Miranda
Josh Age 6
Griffin
Lacey (the bane of many strong players, because she always replies instantly)
Mariah
Alicia
Josh Age 7

CM is probably the best at playing down to yr level. not dropping a rook etc. it's also a steal, the latest version can be had for prob 10 bucks. u get great tutorials, great personalities, & a very strong tactical engine.
