No, it's a build-it-yourself, no-frills, no-name box with an Intel MB and a heavy duty CPU fan/heatsink.
Thanks....I bought that system (Gateway) in Aug. which just happened to have the same specs.

The machine has a low-end GT130 video card which is tremendous overkill since I used it only once when I installed Ubuntu 11.4 64 bit. The box also has a Sony DVD-burner for an optical drive, a 1 TB Western Digital HD, and an Asus PCIe WiFi-n card. All for under US$1,100. I operate it remotely as it lives in a separate room which it shares with food and home supply storage.

With the same 3.4 GHz Core i7-2600 CPU, Apple sells a 27 inch screen iMac with 4 GB RAM for US$2,200.

One reason among many that I don't buy Apple. Don't get me wrong, they're great, well built, quality products. However, PC's are more flexible imho.

Gateway has a reputation for being cheaply made and terrible support since Acer took over. I'm on a tight budget and without building my own PC this was my best price/cost ratio I found.

I also got them, Future Shop, to take hundreds off and put it into a 3 year walk-in warranty.

I asked, as if it were the same machine I was interested if you came upon problems with it. I haven't so far. There's also no intelligent reviews on the net about this model so any info would be good.

For most people, I'd say that if you're going to have only one computer then it should be a Macintosh. However, for the best performance over price ratio, I'd suggest buying a no-name box or rack mount like I've done and run the CPU-intensive applications remotely from a Mac.

For those adverse to Apple products, I'd suggest a no-name box running Ubuntu Linux, which is getting better every week and is closing the gap between itself and the Macintosh experience.

Sometimes a used Macintosh can be a good deal and can be had for only a couple of hundred dollars. I've got a nine year old iMac 800 MHz PowerPC G4 (1 GB RAM, 120 GB HD) that is running right now doing useful work. It's good at most things except perhaps for video applications. And it's all OpenBSD Unix underneath, so it has a full GNU C/C++ development system and can do X Windows too.

Another restart

Post by sje »

At present I'm recovering from several days without power and connectivity due to the recent snowstorm. I expect to restart the perft(13) calculation from checkpoint files soon.
