On-line Blitz tourney October

Post by hgm »

The on-line engine blitz tourney for October will take place

Saturday Oct 22, 3pm EST (21:00 CET)

(Note this assumes daylight savings time will still be in force! If not, add one hour!)
To connect you can use the command

winboard -zp -ics -icshost 80.100.28.169 -icshelper timeseal -fcp ENGINE.exe -fd ENGINEFOLDER -autoKibitz

(for UCI engines add -fUCI)

HGM,

When is the best time for us to test your system for load? Mostly questioning a large number of spectators? Would prefer to test it during your October Blitz tourney?

It currently looks like the 2011 Pan-Am event will be on the weekend of Nov 19/20 2011.

Yes, I think the blitz tourney would provide an excellent opportunity for a stress test. We should keep in mind that blitz tends to provide much more stress with the same number of viewers, though. Some quick math:

My upload link is 256 Kbits/sec, i.e. 32 Kbyte/sec. A style-12 board is about 180 bytes, so I could upload about 175 boards/sec. So even with 100 spectators each obseving the same game, they should still only experience a delay of 0.6 sec when there is a move in that game.

Of course there are commands that produce more output than sending a board, in particular move lists. These require 53 bytes per line (containing two halfmoves), so for a 60-move game it would be 3KB. So only 10/sec of those. But move-lists are requested only when people switch game, which they won't do all in synchronicity. Even when they are all observing the top game, and it finishes, they are likely to first issue a 'games' command tosee which games are still playing, spreadout over in interval of several seconds, before they type a command to observe a new one. So even then 100 requests for move lists of a nearly finished game are likely to come inspread out over at least 10 sec, meaning they can be processed almost without delay.

I don't know how chatty people typically are. Tells are typically 40-80 characters, but they will always go to everyone. They are shorter than the boards, though. Of course the engines will kibitz as well, and kibitz lines can be longer than a board.

Anyway, it seems delays should be quite bearable even with 100 people. The main question is if the TCP/IP software in all components (computer, router, modem) will be able to handle that many connections without overflowing tables, etc. But I would be surprised if this was a problem.

Can we muster enough connections to make a meaningful stress test? We could request the participants of the blitz tourney to remain logged in afterwards, so that I can start a tourney at the ACCA TC. But only having passive observers, even if there would be 100, would not make a very realistic test. At least some of them should do things, like sending shouts or tells.

I've sent email to the ACCA members stating that we should use your blitz tourney as a stress test.

Your math looks ok, but you left out people observing multiple games at once and the transmission of the PV's to each of multiple observations per spectator. During these tournaments, I usually watch my game and 5 or more other games while getting the kibitz output for all of the games I am viewing. I am still carrying on chats with others at the same time. I know several others that do the same.

The only other issue with your math is that systems modeling tells us that people's actions and group actions are more accurately modeled with exponential distributions instead of linear distributions.

But this is long-TC Chess. So even if you are watching 5 games, and everyone is watching these same 5 games, the chances that all 5 of these ges moved in the same second is pretty small. In fact the chance that even two of them move in the same second is pretty small. So the calculation was just for response time, not for total sustained bandwidth.

But the proof of the server is in the playing...

You could have a problem at the beginning of each game with enough engine participants due to rapid moving through the opening books.

Lets see what happens.

Indeed, but only if they were all set to 'follow' that player. Because you can't 'observe' games before they start, and any time later would make you miss the opening moves.

It might be tricky if all games start exactly at the same instant. Perhaps I should put a sleep(2) in mamer just before it sends the command to start the game?

The stress test worked well; at one time we had 20 guests each observing all games, and no problems were detected. Zappa had to be forfeited because it could not stay connected longer than 1 min; this seems tohave beenalocalproblem, though, as it apparently had gone away when that machine was switched to another wireless adapter, and started observing games. The game Crafty-Gaviota did not start, which wasnoticedonly after the round completed (so we all had to wait for it...) but later inspection of the channel-49 traffic revealed Gaviota had been disconnected when the round started.

The mamer patch seems to work: I see no more 3 consecutive same colors or an imbalance > 2 anywhere in the schedule.

Oh, and 'admin' was Joker for the first 2 rounds, and replaced by Ayito for the rest (both on a slow laptop), when I discovered that observing a game made Joker crash.
