Strange human vs phalanx game

Post by stegemma »

Trying to connecting to scid, i've done this little game: me vs phalanx. I've used default parameters, for phalanx, selecting the proposed ELO of 1900 (i'm about 1750 ELO chess-player). Phalanx played the strange move that you can see:

Code: Select all

[Event "?"]
[Site "?"]
[Date "????.??.??"]
[Round "?"]
[White "?"]
[Black "Phalanx 1900 ELO"]
[Result "1-0"]

1.e4 Nf6 2.Nc3 d6 3.d4 e5 4.dxe5 dxe5 5.Qxd8+ Kxd8 6.Bg5 Bd6 7.Bc4 Bg4 8.
Bxf7 Rf8 9.Bb3 Bc5 10.f3 Bd7 11.O-O-O h6 12.Bh4 g5 13.Bg3 Nc6 14.Nge2 Kc8
15.h4 g4 16.f4 Be3+ 17.Kb1 exf4 18.Bxf4 Bxf4 19.Nxf4 Nxe4 20.Ng6 Nxc3+ 21.
bxc3 Rf2 22.g3 Bf5 23.Nf4 Ne5 24.Rhe1 Nd7 25.Re8# 1-0
The last phalanx's move is very very strange... anybody can imagine the reason for that move?

What I suggest you do is give phalanx that position before the mate in 1 and give it half a minute or so, and look at the PV. If the PV gives a strange pv ignoring the mate-in-1, contact the author.

Analysis by Stockfish 2.1.1 and Sigma Chess 6.2.1:

7. ... Bg4? (+1.37) --> Be6 (+0.32)
12. ... g5 (+2.14) --> Nc6 (+1.85)
15. h4 (+1.65) --> Kb1 (+2.14)
16. ... Be3+ (+2.38) --> Nh5 (+2.10)
17. ... exf4 (+3.49) --> Nh5 (+2.80)
18. Bxf4 (+2.74) --> Nxf4 (+3.49)
19. ... Nxe4? (+4.00) --> Re8 (+3.03)
20. Ng6?? (+0.52) --> Nxe4 (+4.00)
21. ... Rf2? (+1.61) --> Rf6 (+0.72)
22. g3? (+0.84) --> Rhf1 (+1.61)
22. ... Bf5? (+2.34) --> Rf6 (+0.84)
23. Nf4?? (+0.64) --> Rhf1 (+2.34)
23. ... Ne5?? (+8.60) --> b6 (+0.64)

And the one to be expected...

24. ... Nd7?? (+mate 1) --> Bd7 (+9.62)

I ought to give the last move three quenstion marks...

Phalanx has a blind spot for some reason - rooks on the back rank aren't immediately obvious to it. And Scid's Tacgame feature is buggy/not very good anyway, and certainly not as good as the ELO rating stated.

I can't believe people use this feature on SCID instead of Scid vs. PC where it is much more mature. Why ?

The next version of Scid vs. PC *should* have a rewritten computer vs. player feature - similar to the serious game but including xboard engines , and minus the brain dead issues.
