Many top engines are also commercial engines, and the most popular commercial GUIs (Fritz, Chessbase, Aquarium) only support native Chessbase format or UCI, or in the case of Aquarium provide only incomplete support of Winboard.

In other words, it's mostly about reaching the largest possible audience, especially if one has commercial aspirations.
