| When playing sudden death games, say game/5', with NO INCREMENT, traditionally I think most programs just set goal time to X% of remaining time per move. We still do so in Komodo, not having researched these time controls too much as the testing organizations don't use them. I haven't even checked open-source programs to see what they do. What is the state-of-the-art on this? Has anyone come up with a better algorithm than this crude but reasonable rule? It seems there should be one, but it's not so obvious. |
personally I use in movei expected moves to finish the game or the next time control based on my memory(I did not work on movei in the last years and did not look at the source at the time of this post).
The idea is that if I expect long game I want to use less time to keep time for the next moves.
I am sure my function to evaluate expected number of moves to finish the game can be improved but I basically had 2 rules.
1)I expect less moves to finish the game in pawn endgames.
2)I expect less moves to finish the game when one side has a big advantage(at least 2 pawns)
I think that it may be productive also to use more time when you are close to draw by the fifty move rule.
Note that I do not think that you can get a big elo improvement in repeating time control like the CEGT or the CCRL use thanks to using more time when you expect the game to be finished faster than the number of the remaining moves but my guess is that you can get 1-5 elo improvement even at that time control.
I believe that using the opponent time can be also a good idea for sudden time control.
I believe that if you see that the opponent has a time advantage then it may be a good idea to play faster and that if you see that you have a time advantage then it may be a good idea to play slower(at least in ponder off games)
I am not sure if the same is correct for ponder on games. |
