The MESSAGE can contain \n escapes, and it is upto the GUI implementation to make sure that works. (A nice GUI would respond to mouse clicks in this dialog, e.g. by pretending the user typed the clivked line.) For Shogi variants, there only has to be a 'promote? (y/n)'. The referee will finish the move (sendin it with the appropriate promo char).

In SAN double capitals would not be ambiguous. For FEN I was thinking about surrounding any multi-char piece name by commas. In protovol format it can just be everything upto the linefeed, after the coords. More than 25 board files is a bigger problem.
