The new iPhone 5S will have a bomb A7 CPU! The A6, with only two core was already nearly as fast as the best of the 4-cores competitors...
Here's what they said today during its presentation:
"Huge leap forward in mobile computing performance."
System-on-a-chip A7 64-bit chip, first ever on a smartphone.
"I don't think the other guys are even talking about it yet."
Twice as many transistors for same physical space as the A6.
iOS 7 updated for 64-bit. Native kernel, libraries and drivers, all built-in apps re-engineered.
Full Xcode support, backwards compatible. "Benefits are huge." CPU and graphics are twice as fast. CPU is 40x faster than original iPhone, with half coming with jump between A6 and A7.
OpenGL ES 3.0, up to 56x faster graphics performance than the original iPhone.
64 bits will benefit chess programs enormously. They say its raw speed is twice the A6's... But they didn't say if it has four core or two... That would make it four times faster!

Lets wait until we benchmarked the monster with stock fish.

We'll need to recompile the iOS app in 64 bit to get the best out of it.

Another Big news is that Samsung just announced to enable all 8 cores alltogether in their Big.Little configuration: 4 cortex A15 + 4 cortex A7. It's already proven by Mediatek CPUs that even the little A7 cores are great chess performers!

Tord, are you reading this ?
Yes, I am reading this, while taking a short break from my work on the updated iOS 7 version of Stockfish. So yes, there will be a 64 bit iOS Stockfish in the very near future.
Apple's latest iOS development kit contains two separate 4-inch iPhone simulators; "iPhone Retina (4-inch)" and "iPhone Retina (4-inch 64-bit)". Stockfish is only about 5% faster in the 64-bit simulator. Of course, this doesn't necessarily mean the speedup will be similarly small when running on the actual devices. We'll just have to wait and see.
