The last I heard from Don was Oct 4 and only a couple of days later on I found out about his health issues. I wrote back to him immediately but he never replied -- and I knew that it didn't bode well. We were in intense communication back in 2010 when I was helping him with a distributed test whilst he was developing first Doch, then Komodo on my Linux quad. He was an honest and good-natured person who liked to speak his mind no matter what. May God help him rest his soul and rest in peace. He will be remembered.

I am saddened to have just now found out about Don's passing.

Even though I only knew him through his forum posts, his integrity and passion for computer chess were obvious.

Don was a giant in the field, and surely inspired many other programmers.
Even as the author of a world-class commercial engine he freely shared his ideas and expertise with others.

He made great contributions to the art of computer chess, and enriched many people's lives.

My deepest condolences to Don's family and friends.

can't believe this and deeply saddened.

I hope Komodo wins the next WCCC as that was one of Don's wishes from three years back.

Yes, we should have played this year but Komodo MP was not out until too close to tournament time if I recall correctly, and cost was also a consideration. I think Don along with many people here came to accept TCEC as the "true" championship, and he lived to see Komodo make it to the final, though not to see it actually win the event, as seems likely but not certain as of now.

Wow! I had no idea he was battling leukemia. I had a baby sister who succumbed to leukemia as well. Don was always a very cool guy and will be missed. May he rest in peace.
