Why do you consider a copy and paste of another engine a "new" engine?

Improvement of 40-50 elo over the original is considered copy&paste. Also Roc, just like Gull is open source, so no harm is done. :)

Can't you switch off TBs simply by not providing the Syzygy path?

Of course I can, Tom, that's why I called it immodest by myself. Just as for Fritz- GUI it's a matter of deleting the pathes in GUI- parameters having to give them in again later on, and it's 3 of them for Syzygys together with dtz and wdl,
Peter.

I have started a 2046-game match between Roc 0.3 HNI and JV's Gull 3.1, TC 20"+1", Threads = 16 (8 cores w/ HT), Hash = 4096M, Ponder = ON, Syzygy. After 110 games, Gull 3.1 has a slim lead over Roc 0.3, +23-19=68.

Would be nice if it ran on non-Windows (POSIX) platforms. Or used multithreading. Those are two of the main limitations of Gull, IMO.

2046 games? Is this some Cryptonomicon-like meaningful number?

Looking forward to the result, anyway.

Re: "Roc" - it is an improvement !!

Overnight, Roc 0.3 crashed 3 times under Arena, while Gull 3.1 ran stable, so after 543 games I see Gull 3.1 ahead, +149-96=298.

I think it should also be compared to LazyGull and Gull 3.1 forked by Basil Falcinelli.

https://github.com/basil00/Gull
Just for the record, Gull 3.1 is not a basil forked.
It is all possible equal to the project of ThinkingALot,
Nor do I think there are differences of game between the twos versions.
